1/26/2000 ACCOUNT SECURITY ISSUES *IMPORTANT*
Simutronics employees will *NEVER* ask you for your password. Protect your account from potential sabotage by keeping your password secret!

Simutronics and its employees will *NEVER* send you updates to their software through e-mail. Programs in e-mail claiming to be from Simutronics can contain viruses or password "sniffers". All software supported by Simutronics is available *ONLY* in our download libraries on our web site.

Simutronics only uses play.net web site addresses for access to its games. NEVER enter account or password information into any web site claiming faster access to the game that does not have a play.net address.

Please report anything suspicious to [email protected]

Lets go over that one more time...

SIMUTRONICS WILL NEVER DO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: 1) Ask you to reply to a "letter from feedback" that is addressed from hotmail.com or any other non-simutronics.com e-mail address. 2) Ask you to use an alternative sign-in page from a URL that is not either PLAY.NET or one of the other official Simutronics supported URL's (gemstone.net for example) 3) Include the phrase "This is not a scam!" in a "letter from feedback" asking you to use an alternative signing page. 4) Misspell their own company name within the header of an e-mail to you.

All of the above listed scams have been tried and most of them have succeeded to some degree. Use your common sense when you receive unsolicited e-mail from anyone. We rarely send out unsolicited e-mail, and we would not do so due to an error on our sign-in page. If we have a technical problem, we post it on the website, we do not send e-mail about it.

Be stingy and be safe. Don't let these "kewl hakurs" get the better of you. :)

1/26/2000 PREMIUM AUCTION
The premium auction is set for March 24th - March 27th and will be held within a rarely seen Elven Airship. No landing spot has been determined as of yet. The airship itself will house the auction rooms, and only be accessible to those Four Winds members of two months or longer.

The auction itself will be comprised of three sets of rooms. A room strictly for bidding silver, a room set up for bidding by token, and a room for Four Wind Members of no less than one year which will also feature bidding by token. Auction times will be 12 - 6 pm eastern on both Saturday and Sunday in all three rooms. Players may venture back and forth between the silver and token rooms, and into the one-year and up room if eligible as they wish. A player may only win one item however regardless of which room it is won in.

Auction rules for the silver rooms will apply effective immediately, and are available simply by typing AUCTION. The silver bidding will not be divided up by amount or age, it will simply be, high bid wins. Tokens will be provided to all eligible folks attending the auction, but the token will only be given to the first member of your account family entering the airship, so be sure you board the vessel carefully. Bidding by token affords an equal chance to all bidders, and the selection of the winner is purely random.

Lastly, a wide variety of merchants are expected to visit and investigate the landing of this airship, so we expect a wide variety of goods and services available to all players, regardless of Four Winds status. These merchants will be setting up shop near the airship, and should have a very interesting assortment of wares to show.

1/26/2000 TEMPORAL PORTALS SIGHTED THROUGHOUT THE REALMS
There have been literally hundred of reports of massive temporal portals tearing open all over the realms. These strange vortexes seem to be large anomalies in time and space itself. Travelers have reported being sucked into these 'rifts' in space, only to emerge in entirely different locations. One voyager was quoted as saying, "Aaaiiieeee!"

Local scholars believe these irregularities may be directly related to subtle shifts in the essence of magical energies. But none will speculate on what implications this may have and when the phenomenon will come to an end.

1/26/2000 BREAKAGE SYSTEM MESSAGING TEST RELEASED!
The breakage system messaging has been released as a test of how the system will operate. Weapons and armors have an inherent material strength and durability. The items will degrade when they come in contact with each other through normal use. You may LOOK at an item to see its integrity value. The integrity denotes the current deterioration state of the item. When items clash through use, there is a chance that the weaker item will sustain irreparable damage and be rendered useless. A message will indicate such an occurence. During the test, no item will be removed from the game resulting from such irreparable damage, though a message will be shown to indicate the possibility of such an outcome. At any time, you may invoke FIX to restore an item to its original status.

1/26/2000 SIGN UP A BUDDY!
Win an alteration, free quest, or one-month free game play by inviting your friends and family to play GemStone III. Go to http://buddy.play.net/gs3 for more details.

1/26/2000 THAT EVIL GUY THE JANITOR. WHO OR WHAT IS IT?
In a world where millions of items are constantly being manipulated, there is a lot of potential lag associated with making the calculations that track the state of those items. The "janitor" is part of our object and memory management system - it is there to reduce lag, increase the number of players that can exist in the game, and generally improve the overall performance of the game.

The janitor is a normal game mechanic (see NEWS Catagory 5, item 7) and items lost to it cannot be replaced. In the Platinum version of the game, this would include items lost due to dropping at death and depart. Yes, it may be an out of character loss, but that is a concession we have to make in order to make the game playable.

There is never a reason to put your items on the ground except to get rid of them. If something of yours gets put on the ground for you, retrieve it as quickly as possible. However, if the item is lost before it can be recovered, then there is nothing we can do to replace it for you. We apologize for any inconveniences associated with the system, but hope you understand the need for its existence.

1/26/2000 LOSING ITEMS ON THE GROUND! IMPORTANT INFORMATION!
The following quote comes from our POLICY verb under item 13:

"In any case where an item is lost or damaged through this type of normal game mechanics, repair or replacement cannot be authorized."

It is very important to understand that this includes items on the ground. It does not matter if you put them there deliberately, if you were disarmed, or if you were forced to drop the item some other way. All items on the ground are at risk of permanent loss, and cannot be authorized for replacement.

1/26/2000 LULL YOUR FOES (AND FRIENDS) TO SLEEP!
After much study and more than a few unintentional catnaps, the scholars at the Elanthian Bardic College have completed a new spellsong: Lullabye!

The unfortunate victim err... lucky recipient of the bard's sweetly sung cradlesong, if they aren't fortunate enough to resist the song's pull, may become drowsy... experience slowed movement... become temporarily mesmerized and immobile, or even fall completely asleep. The lullabye is effective against both other adventurers and all manner of foul beasties.

Stated Troubadour Ceareanan of House Loenthra as he dropped off to sleep, "It's the most relaxing work I've done in years!"

1/26/2000 HOW TO CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION
If you need to cancel an account and/or subscription, please do one of the following:

1) Best method: Use the feedback section of the Website to send the request. Tell us what you want cancelled (full account, one game in particular, Premium service, extra character slots, etc). Since you're writing to us while logged in, we won't need to ask you for security information.

2) Second-best method: Write an e-mail to [email protected]. In the body of the letter, include:

- Account Name
- Answer to security question (probably Mom's maiden name)
- What you want cancelled

We will handle your request and send a confirmation within 5 business days. If you do not receive a confirmation, please resubmit your request.

Regards, Simutronics Billing Department

1/26/2000 HOW TO GET A PIN FOR AN OLD CHARACTER
Since we are beginning to purge the character database of these characters beginning 7/1/98, there is no guarantee that the character in question will still be available. Because of the heavy administrative costs involved in researching PINs for old characters, we have instituted a new policy: Effective April 7, 1998, there will be a 15-dollar charge for PIN requests. This fee will be waived for one character only for an account which is less than 30 days old. You MUST have an active Simutronics account in order to request a PIN. There are two methods you can use to request your character's PIN:

1) Preferred method: Send the answers to the questions below through the
Feedback section of our Website. We prefer you use this method because it
enables us to establish your identity easily.
2) Alternate method: Send a letter to [email protected]. Include all
the information below, plus the answer to your account's security question
(you set this up when you opened your account, and unless you changed the
default question, it was 'What is your mother's maiden name?').

Please answer the questions below to the best of your ability. Note that 1 - 4 MUST be answered.

* 1) Are you aware there is a 15-dollar charge for this service, unless both of the following apply: Your account is less than 30 days old and this is your first PIN request? The fee will be charged to the account receiving the PIN on the day the character is placed on the account.

* 2) What was the screen name on AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve or Genie on which the character was played? NOTE: If the character is on a cancelled Web account, stop here. You can only reactivate that Web account (contact [email protected]), or request a character transfer to be done at the home office. PINs no longer work for characters which have been transferred to the Web, and we will not distribute them. You may find the form for a character transfer by typing NEWS inside the game.

* 3) What is your Simutronics User-ID/Account Name? (Please note that if you are requesting the PIN via e-mail instead of the Feedback section of our Website, we will also need the answer to your account's security question in order to verify your identity)

* 4) What was your character's name? (Either first or last name is mandatory, both are preferred).

Include any of these items that you can recall:
- What game your character played in.
- Level/circle of your character.
- How long ago was this character last used?
- Details of any memorable contacts with any GM.
- When/where you last died & who resurrected you.
- Was your character ever arrested? For what?
- Any details regarding official warnings.

We will place the character on your account for you. Please allow up to 10 days. --Simutronics Billing Department

1/26/2000 HOW TO TRANSFER CHARACTERS BETWEEN ACCOUNTS
The customer service department provides a character transfer service for moving characters from one Simutronics account to another. This service has a $15 fee associated with it, per character transferred to cover the time spent investigating the request. Investigations include verifying billing, ensuring that the transfer is not an attempt to steal characters, as well as making any needed adjustments to the subscriptions on the involved accounts. The fee will be applied to the receiving account unless otherwise noted in question 8.

The Requirements - You must be a customer in good standing with Simutronics. This means:
1. You must not owe any money from unpaid subscriptions;
2. You must have valid and current billing information;
3. You must not be under lockout status or in the process of being
locked out;
4. You must already have a character on the account to which the
character is being transferred.

To transfer a character from one Web account to another, do the following. Copy and paste the eight (8) items below into an email directed to [email protected]. All eight items are required to complete the transfer process, and any request without all eight answered will be returned to the sender.

1. What is the name of the account from which the character is to be
transferred?
Answer:

the answer to the fourth question?

the need to add/remove extra characters slots on the accounts involved,
and deletion of any temporary characters on the receiving account.
Answer:
8. Do you understand that by submitting this request that the receiving
account is agreeing to the $15 service fee associated with a succesful transfer?
Answer:

Send the above information to [email protected], preferably from the e-mail address we have on file for you. You may change your e-mail address in the billing section of our Web site, and we recommend that you keep all of your personal information up to date through that method.

A billing supervisor will review all billing information and will also read in-game logs for the character to be transferred. You will be notified when the transfer occurs, but if ten days go by without a change please write again to the above address.

Note to Premium Home Owners: Due to technical difficulties, it is not possible to transfer characters who own Homes between accounts. We can remove the home for you if you still wish to transfer the character.

1/26/2000 CHARACTER DATABASE PURGE CRITERIA *IMPORTANT*
Due to the huge numbers of new users visiting GemStone III daily, we have found it necessary to schedule routine database purges every 15 days. Additionally, to keep the databases clean and functioning efficiently, the following criteria are now used to determine whether or not to purge a character from the database:

1) Any character who has less than 1 hour total playing time
over their career AND has not logged into the game for 15
days will be purged.

2) Any character of any level, who has not logged into the
game over the last 90 days will be purged.

** NOTE ** If you will be unable to log on for several weeks due to military service or other reasons beyond your control, it may be possible to have your character saved. Write to GemStone III Feedback with any such requests.

1/25/2000 WEDDINGS ON SALE
The new wedding system is finished and weddings are now on sale! Type WEDDING HELP for more information, or visit the wedding information page on our website and sign up for a November, December, January or February wedding!

1/25/2000 IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE
Any time you send email to Simutronics in response to a letter you have received from us, please make sure that your email client includes the original letter in your response. Because we process hundreds of email letters each day, it is imperative that we have the full history of letters in anything you respond to.

Most email clients allow the toggling of this feature, but AOL users do not have this option available to them. The best way to get around the problem is to FORWARD the letter back to us rather than replying. On AOL and in most email programs, you are able to edit and make additions to forwarded letters, allowing you to write your response and maintain a record of previous information sent.

1/25/2000 TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR VALUABLE ITEMS
By registering your more valuable or unique items, GameMasters have a better chance to keep track of them should they need to be replaced or fixed. Should you lose an item, it will increase the possibility of getting it returned if you REGISTER it. You should especially register anything you purchase from another player.

Visit your local registrar for details.

1/25/2000 SAVE YOUR CHARACTER FROM DEATH MOST PERMANENT
Be sure to gain favor with the gods, and receive your deeds to use in case of your death. The way to earn deeds may be mysterious, but it is well worth the effort. Those in the know hint that you should have at least three deeds at all times, and some even say you should have more.
