2/29/2000 RANGER CLASS
Do you have an inner love for the forest? Are you curious about the path those close to nature travel? Join the Rangers of the Order of Lorekeepers for the second in the six month-long series of classes about all things pertaining to Rangers.

Hosted by Lady Alexys, Lord Turgen, Lord Zanteal, and Lord Breeze, the second class will be held this coming Restday, the 5th of Charlatos, at 10 PM Elven time. This class will focus on ranger magic and will include demonstrations and open discussion.

The class will be held at Silverwood Manor in Wehnimer's Landing, located one east from the temple at 200 Erebor Square.

2/28/2000 UPCOMING CHANGES TO SKINS AND BUNDLES
Due to some changes being made to skinning and furs/skins, old bundles will not be able to be unbundled starting on March 13th. If you have need of your skins in single units, we strongly urge you to separate them from your bundles before that date as they will not be replaceable.

When the changes are implemented, Warrior Guildmasters will need to obtain new skins for their sheathmaking, as the old skin types will not be usable. No other uses for the old skins will be affected, including selling and donations of these items.

2/28/2000 IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT GAME SHUTDOWNS (SHORT)
While Simutronics continues efforts to fix the problems which have been causing uncontrolled shut downs, we have found that we may need to reset the game more often than once each day. Please be aware that Simutronics will announce resets each day when necessary to roll out additional software that will assist in tracking, identifying, and fixing the current problems that are causing the instability. We apologize for the interruptions, and assure you that we are doing everything we can to correct the problems as quickly as possible. For more detailed information type NEWS 1 13.

2/28/2000 A NOTE ABOUT CRASHES FROM THE GS3 MANAGERS (LONG)
As you may or may not be aware, during the last month GemStone III has experienced technical difficulties that have grown more and more apparent every day. We would like to take a few minutes to describe the issues GemStone III is facing and the steps we have taken and will be taking to resolve the problem.

The problems currently causing crashes in GemStone III have likely always existed within the product. It is only now that these problems are beginning to manifest themselves, probably uncovered by changes to the hardware or software that runs the game. We know exactly what the problems are, however, thus far we have not been able to find a solution (though several solutions have been tried.)

As we have been working on solutions for the problem, our task has grown more and more difficult. The crashes spawned by these problems within our system have caused new (minor) problems. The crashes introduce corruption and bugs into the game itself, which in turn causes the game to crash more often. Which in turn causes more crashes, and so forth. It is imperative that we find solutions to the core problems before things grow worse. As a result, Simutronics has decided to take the following steps:

* We have assigned all in-house development resources to resolving this problem.

* A week ago, in an attempt to reduce the number of crashes, Simutronics began taking the game down every afternoon at 1PM Eastern. Unfortunately, in order to upgrade the system with fixes as soon as possible, we will no longer be able to schedule these outages. It is likely that GemStone III will be taken down multiple times a day during the next few weeks as we work as fast as we can to get the necessary fixes into place. These outages will be proceeded by a number of system announcements in order to give you an opportunity to prepare for a reset.

We understand that resets and outages are very inconvenient, but in order to correct this problem as soon as possible, it is necessary for us to be able to make software and hardware changes as soon as they are ready. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

* In addition to various changes to our hardware and software, Simutronics will be making a few changes within the game as well. Currently the character manager and the merchant manager are not built into the game of GemStone III. These areas are separate from the game themselves. Characters inside these managers are not within the game of GemStone III. These days, most merchant shops no longer use the merchant manager. Only the old shops in Wehnimer's Landing still use this system. Within the next few weeks we will be converting these old shops, as well as the character manager, into a system which will allow them to be accessed from within the game.

* We are planning a number of small surprises for you. As our plans become more solid we will announce the exact nature of these surprises in more detail. We have received a number of requests for experience bonuses, however we are unable to offer those at this time.

Once again, we thank you for your patience during this difficult time, and we assure you we are doing everything in our power to resolve these problems with speed and minimal impact on you. - Melissa Callaway (Online Community Manager) & Suz Dodd (Producer)

2/26/2000 CAST TURNED PLAYER FRIENDLY
CAST will now look for a creature target before looking for a player target, in the interests of saving our dear constable from too much work. Care should still be taken in the use of powerful magiks, but the unavoidable mistaken casts will no longer occur.

This does not mean CAST alone will find a creature to target, it simply means CAST KOB with KOBBLE in the room will target a Kobold before Kobble.

2/24/2000 *** WIZARD CHARGING FORUM ***
Join the Mentor Society on Monday, February 28 at 9 PM Elven Standard Time at Silverwood Manor in Wehnimer's Landing for a forum on the use of the wizard spell Charge Item. The forum will include a review of the charging process, a question and answer session, and a demonstration of the spell.

Silverwood Manor in Wehnimer's Landing is located one east from the temple, at 200 Erebor Square.

2/23/2000 GEMSTONE RESET
For the next several days we will be resetting GemStone at 1:00 PM Eastern Time while we continue work on our software maintenance. Please gather up your items and be prepared to log out of the game for 5-10 minutes at that time. We are sorry for the inconvenince.

2/23/2000 CONSTABLE EXTENDS TOWN JURISDICTION!
Rampant lawlessness and a general lack of respect for the law has forced the Constable to action. No longer will murder be tolerated near the Landing. Those wishing to duel should travel to deserted areas far from town or be prepared to face the wrath of the judge. Hearthstone Manor has sought out and received the help of the law as well, and murder will no longer be tolerated near the venerable estate either.

2/23/2000 FURRIER ADDING BULK BUYING PLAN
After a quick chat with the proprietor of one of the gemshops, the many furriers of the land have decided they also wish to offer the service of sorting through your containers for your skins and hides. No longer will you have to root through your sack looking for orc pelts or troll hides, the furrier will do the work for you. Simply sell your container, rather than selling your individual skins. They'll go through your packs and sacks, take the skins out, and return your container to you along with your profit!

2/22/2000 MESSAGE BOARDS - OLD CATEGORIES
The "new" message boards have been with us for several months now, and we are preparing to close down the old ones (categories 1-48). If there are any items on those boards that you wish to save for future reference, please be certain to capture them and put them in your own files. Target date for take-down is March 1...that gives you just over a week!

2/21/2000 SONIC GEAR IMPROVEMENT
Scholars from Ta'Illistim have recently announced a new breakthrough in sonic gear creation! After countless hours of study, scholars have discovered that the pitch of one's voice can improve the resistance of sonic gear towards strong winds. From now on, strong winds will no longer cause sonic gear to dissipate as long as the singer subjected to the winds can stay on his or her feet.

2/17/2000 * A CHANGE TO FAME *
A long awaited feature had been added to the fame code that will allow you to remove your name from the fame lists. Simply turn off your fame flag by typing "flag !fame" and check into one of your local Inns. As long as you leave your fame flag turned off your name will not appear on the fame lists. If you wish to have your name on the fame list, then simply turn your fame flag on (type "flag" for usage) before you check into the Inn and if you qualify your name will be there for all to see.

2/16/2000 SORCERER SPELL CHANGE
The power of sorcery has taken a turn... it is not as you once knew it to be. Changes have been made to sorcerer spells 705 Disintegrate, 708 Limb Disruption and 711 Pain Infliction. The spells are functioning as designed, but you may receive some "strange" messaging for the next couple days.

2/9/2000 POURABLE POTION BUG FIX
A longstanding bug has been corrected with the pour verb that allowed drinks or potions to be used to recharge items that contained a different spell or were not even pour-type items. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but anything chargeable this way was never intended to be possible.

2/8/2000 CHANGE TO EXPERIENCE
Starting shortly this evening, the amount of experience you will be able to gain from a creature will top out at 5 years over your age and remain flat at that rate for any number of years above 5 (a maximum of 150 possible exp points).

2/3/2000 SIMUTRONICS OUTAGE
Simutronics will be taking down one of our servers on Friday morning in order to do some maintenance. The outage is planned for 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM Eastern time on Friday, February 4, 2000. This will affect the login process through the website, the SGE and the Bulletin Boards. Anyone in GemStone III at the time we take the machine down will not be dropped out of the game, but they should not be able to reenter if they leave.

2/2/2000 FIRST FRIDAYS - FESTIVAL OF LEARNING
The Festival of Learning will be hosted by the House of the Argent Aspis on the first Friday of every month at 10 PM Eastern. Hunts, games, stories and opportunities to learn more about Elanthia and its history are open to everyone! House Argent Aspis can be found at the far southeast end of Wehnimer's Landing.

2/2/2000 IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE
Any time you send email to Simutronics in response to a letter you have received from us, please make sure that your email client includes the original letter in your response. Because we process hundreds of email letters each day, it is imperative that we have the full history of letters in anything you respond to.

Most email clients allow the toggling of this feature, but AOL users do not have this option available to them. The best way to get around the problem is to FORWARD the letter back to us rather than replying. On AOL and in most email programs, you are able to edit and make additions to forwarded letters, allowing you to write your response and maintain a record of previous information sent.

2/1/2000 NEW MAC WIZARD RELEASED - FIXES CRASH BUG
Simutronics has released a new Macintosh Wizard, version 2.03. This release fixes the problem that could cause your system to crash when quitting the game. We recommend that all Mac users upgrade to this latest version as soon as possible.

Simutronics is also planning on forcing updates for Mac users in the near future, so if you are still using Version 1 of the Mac wizard, we suggest you save yourself some trouble and update in the near future.

As always, you can find the latest Mac wizard on the GemStone III home page, under the news items "Macintosh Users - Important Upgrade" or "Try GemStone III Beta Software". You can always get our software from http://software.play.net/ as well.
