1/28/2004 | LAX RECORD KEEPING DISCOVERED IN GUILD AUDIT |
After receiving numerous complaints from new guildmasters about missing records of their promotions, the Guild Council reluctantly chose to undertake a full audit of its guildmaster files. After much paper chasing and the occassional brow beating, it was discovered that some unscrupulous guildmasters had simply not bothered to document their promotion records.
In response to this finding, the Guild Council has dispatched its Guild Enforcers to persuade the wayward guildmasters to better appreciate the virtues of good record keeping. Unfortunately, some new guildmasters who have achieved their status within the last several months may not be fully registered and recognized as guildmasters because of this lapse in guild discipline. As such, the Guild Council requests that new guildmasters who suspect themselves to be improperly recognized as guildmasters seek ASSISTance. (If you were promoted to guildmaster status by a NPC guildmaster between the start of GS4 and the 16th of Lormesta/January, please use ASSIST REQUEST to have your guildmaster status fixed to be fully functional.) |

1/21/2004 | JUSTICE PERSONNEL MORE PERSONABLE |
In an effort to give your time spent in the justice system a more warm and fuzzy feeling, a few changes to personnel policies are going into effect.
Those that frequent the constable's office will find that the display case has been taken down, and instead, you can ASK CONSTABLE ABOUT a person, and he'll be more than happy to tell you what crimes they're wanted for. Upon arrest, the constable will now check your personal belongings for notes, and will provide these to the judge at your hearing so that they may be applied to a fine, if you choose a fine for your sentence. (Those choosing other punishments will have their notes returned to them with the rest of their belongings after time is served.) During the hearing before the judge, if a criminal fails to answer the judge and is held in contempt, he will be returned to a jail cell and periodically asked if he's ready to go back to court. (You must ANSWER YES to return to court and face the judge.) Finally, for those that choose prison sentences, the criminal will now be able to INQUIRE from the guard about their remaining incarceration time. |

1/13/2004 | MOONSTONE ABBEY'S GRAND ILLUMINATION |
Long ago, on the night of a clear crisp winter solstice, while the Sisters gathered and danced within their circle, there came a visitor in the form of a warm spirit. It beckoned them to follow. Through a forest full of twists and turns, the warm spirit lead the Sisters to a crystal clear lake. Across the lake, topping the highest trees, they saw the three towers of Moonstone Abbey. The Sisters had once again a place in their beloved abbey.
After much toil and renovation, Moonstone Abbey now stood in all its splendor. A full cycle of the moons later, the members of Moonstone Abbey opened its doors for the public to bear witness to the magicks held deep inside the ancient abbey. This Grand Illumination and Blessing of the Lands has become an annual event. However...there are more secrets to unfold, as once again on the cool winter solstice night, there came a dark spirit. It spoke of things hidden - of knowledge not yet learned. One name could be heard carried by the crisp breeze of the winter night...Makiri. The members of Moonstone Abbey invite all to come join them in their annual celebration and Grand Illumination of Moonstone Abbey. Share in lore of the Abbey and learn of secrets not yet told. On the 21st day of Lormesta (January 21st) beginning at 10pm Elven time. Merryment! Dancing! A time for rededication. Moonstone Abbey can be found Southwest of the city of Ta'Illistim. Follow the illuminated path through the forest and the grove. |

WHO (also known as STATUS) has had some improvements.

WHO LETTER [a-z] lets you view people whose name begins with the provided letter. WHO GROUP displays everyone online who is looking for a group (you can look for a group with PROFILE TOGGLE GROUP). |

1/12/2004 | DRAGGING UNDERGOES CHANGES |
As many of you have noticed, dragging a body has been essentially a "free" operation since the release of GemStone IV. This has finally been corrected. Groups will be very advantageous in dragging heavy bodies now, but in most cases, one-on-one dragging should still be possible, unless you're a halfling attempting to drag a giant.
To drag as a group, simply make sure that each member of the group who wishes to help is automatically attempting to drag the target player (via DRAG {name}). When the leader of the group attempts to drag, the work will be divided among the group. Additionally, the system has been updated to account for terrain and climate. Dragging someone across an icy floor is much easier than dragging them through wet sand, for example. |

1/11/2004 | SHIELD AUTOCONVERTER AVAILABLE |
Do you have a buckler that's weighing you down? Or a pavis that's not covering as much as it should? Bring your shield to the armorer in the nearest town and put it in the portal you'll find there to get it converted to the proper size.
Shields that shrink will lose some durability; those that grow will become more durable. A converted shield's weight will be the average of its old weight and the weight of a standard shield of the new size. Please see the New GemStone IV Forums for more detailed information. |

1/9/2004 | BOTTOM OF THE BARREL |
It's that time again! Moonshine Manor invites all members and non-members alike to hang up their manners and put on their party caps! On the Day of the Huntress, the 23rd of Lormesta, at roughly 8:30 pm elven time, Moonshine Manor will host the second game of its infamous Bottom of the Barrel. Be prepared to have fun trying to win prizes and money! Need more income before the Spitfire comes to town? Well, here's your last chance! The game begins in Helga's Tavern. All red-haired, green-eyed elven maidens are expected to attend!
What'll be the most talked about event of the Elanthian Year of 5104? Six out of seven halflings agree, "It's the Bottom of the Barrel you've got to see!" |

Later that same night, you are cordially invited to an evening of mystery and intrigue. There will be performances, games, and prizes, so don your masks and prepare to dance the night away! The ball will be held at the Northern Fury's tent set up along West Road, beginning at 9:00 elven standard time. |
|
1/8/2004 | NORTHERN FURY RECRUITMENT DRIVE |
Have a hunger for battle? Do you take your weapons to bed with you? Have you given your blade not only a first name, but a last one as well?
If you said yes to any of these and if the prospect of fighting amid a well-ordered army for the good of the realm appeals to you, then head up to Icemule this Restday. The Northern Fury will have a recruitment tent raised not far west of Town Center in Icemule Trace. There will be Fury personnel on duty who can answer questions about membership and tell you about the long and glorious military tradition that is the Northern Fury. Our roster is open to applicants of any skill level during the month of Lormesta. Applicants should have a love of the realms and a desire to protect the innocent. Combat ability is not a prerequisite. A desire to serve the lands is. The tent will be open from 1:00pm through 1:00am (elven time) on the 18th of Lormesta in the year 5104. |

1/7/2004 | MYTH OF THE MEMORIAL GROVE |
Uncounted centuries ago, when the rest of their people fled, a handful of sylvan healers remained with a plague-stricken clan of dwarves and struggled to save them from a disease that afflicted not only the dwarves, but sylvans as well.
The sylvan Hythande and the gnome Eslar will recount a tale about a group of sylvan healers, the dwarves that they aided at great cost to themselves, and the gnomish role in matters that followed. Members of all races are invited to come enjoy this ancient story. Is it myth? Was it magic? Did it really happen? Join Hythande in the graveyard near the Temple, inside the town of Wehnimer's Landing, at 8:00 PM Eastern on the 9th day of Lormesta (Friday). Many years have been spent searching for a legendary site that has been witness to the pilgrimages of sylvans, dwarves, gnomes, and acolytes of Imaera alike -- among many others. With the aid of the local Greengair gnomes, the recent discovery of the ancient gravesite near Wehnimer's Landing has inspired a memorial for all those who have met their final death. Come join us at 6:00 PM Eastern on the 10th day of Lormesta (Saturday) as we honor our remembrances. (Some folks will offer commemorations to Lady Daryann Stormrider, Dame Wanton Destruction, and Lady Kali Sablefen. Others are welcome to speak about those they knew that have passed away). Directions to the memorial site will be posted on the events calendar (https://www.play.net/gs4/events/calendar.asp?ID=1013). |

1/6/2004 | ELANTHIAN JOURNAL TO RESUME PUBLISHING |
It has been a little over a year since the untimely death of Rharosch Dashovath, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Elanthian Journal. Due to obstacles in settling his estate and other difficulties, the paper was forced to suspend operations until very recently.
"What with our ink suppliers getting Red Rot and paper shipments hijacked by Krolvin pirates, it's been impossible to get the newspaper out," stated Nellida Dashovath, daughter of the late publisher. "But things are moving along well now. We'll be printing our first new edition very soon." The pert publisher added, "We could definitely use some reporters. There's been a plague, a war, and a flood of demons since our last issue!" (To submit articles for the Elanthian Journal, please use this link: https://www.play.net/gs4/journal_submission.asp ) |
|
1/5/2004 | SKILL MIGRATION GRACE PERIOD EXPIRATION |
NEWS 1 51 noted that those characters whose rapid skill migration period has already expired would have until Friday, January 2nd, to continue rapid migration. This period has been extended to midnight on the night of Monday, January 5th (TONIGHT!).
For those characters who first logged in to GemStone IV more than 30 days prior to that time, this will be your LAST CHANCE to modify your skills at the rapid rate. Adjusting your skills after that date will take a really long time. Really really long. Possibly longer than that, even, under some circumstances. Those characters who first logged in to GemStone IV less than 30 days before January 5th will have their rapid migration window expire 30 days after their first login. After that, it'll take a really long time (or longer). After a character's rapid migration period has expired, training points earned from experience absorbtion may be spent immediately with no waiting required. The first 60 training points (of any type) earned through "untraining" skills each month may be spent at a slow rate, to facilitate minor training adjustments. Further training points gained through "untraining" may be spent at a rate ten times slower than that. |

If you have a special gemstone, herb or other item that would symbolize your need, feel free to bring it along. | |
1/2/2004 | THE ZUL LOGOTH TOWN IMPROVEMENT AUCTION |

1/2/2004 | ELANTHIAN TRADER'S CONSORTIUM SHOPPING RUNS |

|
1/2/2004 | JANITOR CONVICTED OF CRITTER RUSTLING |
A combined investigation by all of Elanith's Justice organizations has uncovered a nefarious scheme by the Janitor to abscond with large numbers of creatures for an illegal zoo he was maintaining. This creature kidnapping by the Janitor is the likely cause of the disappearances or reduction in numbers of creatures in hunting areas that has recently been reported. Now, if a hunter remains in a hunting area the gallant creature opposition should remain as well, instead of being illegally swept up and taken by the Janitor. Have no fears, the Janitor has been soundly chastised for his role in this sordid affair. The Janitor implemented his scheme shortly after the migration to GemStone IV was performed, probably in the mistaken belief that in all the confusion no one would notice. |
