3/31/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE BLACKBOARDS
A message to all!
A party! A ball!
But how to inform?
E-mail is the norm

But an announcement board
Could be just the ticket
Officers using StormFront
Can even point-and-click it

Great Houses may now request blackboards, which may be written on to deliver messages to your members. Blackboards may be read by everyone, but only certain people may write on them.

Multiple blackboards may be linked together so that changes to one are reflected on all.

To request blackboards for your House, please contact the House Controller.

3/31/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: TERAS ISLE CHE CLERK

3/31/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: TA'ILLISTIM BARD GUILD OPENS!
From far and wide the music rings,
From far and wide the music sings,
And far and wide, musicians say
Seek out Ta'Illistim today!

From far and wide, where'er they roam,
From far and wide, the bards come home,
Rewarded by a cup of ale
And music's friendship without fail.

The Ta'Illistim Bard guild has opened its doors to all bards among the city. GuildMaster Lilithia was heard to say, "Clearly, the other guilds only began to open their doors to the populace at large because they heard *we* were considering it first!"

The guild is located on Glamesine Var, right near the local theatre.

3/31/2004 THE SPELL VERB LEARNS A NEW TRICK
The SPELL verb has been updated with a new option that allows you to view a list of the spells that are currently active on your character. Users who are not using the StormFront Front End can now simply type "SPELL ACTIVE" to view this list.

StormFront users will find the same information located in their "Active Spells" window or may optionally type the command to view the information in the "Story Window".

3/30/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE ENGRAVER UPDATE
Have a shield that's just too plain?
Need something to make it less of the same?

You want it engraved, but you ask and listen
Will it work with my favorite system?

Well, watch out for the steel shavings
Here's an upgrade to CHE engravings

The CHE engraver has been updated to allow it to interact with almost all other systems. Engraved items may now be scripted, polished, and have show descriptions in addition to the engraving. They may also be shown to other people.

In addition, the engraver now supports both the previous ASCII art descriptions and new text descriptions of the CHE coats of arms. You may go to the Engraver's in Wehnimer's Landing and ENGRAVE {shield} ASCII to engrave it in ASCII art format, or ENGRAVE {shield} TEXT to engrave it in text format. If you have a previously engraved shield, the Engraver will change the type of engraving (through the same commands) at no charge.

Currently engraved shields will be converted to the new engraving system the first time they are LOOKed at or TAKEn.

3/30/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: TA'ILLISTIM EMPATH GUILD OPENS!
For those empaths far from home
Or even those that stay close by
If to Ta'Illistim, you do roam
You will find a pleasant surprise

A rising hall for they who heal
Long have her doors been sealed
Tell me empath, how do you feel
Now the guild has been revealed?

After a long journey through Elanthia studying the empathic arts, the Healer Ilaera has returned home to Ta'Illistim. On behalf of the numerous empaths she met during her trek, Ilaera has convinced her cousin, the Guildmaster Ilorin of the Ta'Illistim Empath Guild, to open her hall's doors to guild members from across the lands. In a public statement, Guildmaster Ilorin expressed, "The Ta'Illistim Empath Guild opens its arms to our sisters and brothers, whether they be elf or other. We look forward to a mutual sharing of knowledge and wisdom to reach advancements in our profession."

The Empath Guild can be found on Ellaerin Var, beside several delightful gardens.

3/28/2004 ALCHEMIST SHOP REOPENS
Due to the work of High Magus Shyesa and some local residents, the Alchemist Shop off of Vesitsa Place in Wehnimer's Landing - formally owned and run by Alchemist Bin - is once again reopened and under the care of the Erithi Archmage Krylonna. Previous patrons to the shop are welcomed back, and new patrons are always welcomed.

3/28/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE WORLDWIDE AMUNET RELEASED!
Thoughts of your housemates
Though not always deep
Will invade your waking
And resonate in your sleep
No matter the city
Or town that you roam
You'll converse, if you want
With folks from your home.

Available now to all members of Great Houses of Elanthia is the ability to communicate with members of your House, no matter where in the Lands they might be. How, you ask? Via your House pin/amulet, of course! By using your House amunet, any member of a Great House will be able to transmit their thoughts to fellow members of their House, either by THINKING TO (for thoughts to an individual) or by THINKING (to broadcast to all House members who have their House pins/amulets active at the time.) Nifty, no?

Now you can relay House meetings to other realms while they occur, and receive instant input from members who have travelled far or have taken residence in distant locales. Just reach out...Your Housemates are there!

3/26/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: STORMFRONT MAPS
Maps of treasure, maps of trails,
Maps of seas on which to sail.
Maps all battered, torn and tattered,
Maps of lands where towns and treasure are scattered.
Roll it up and guard it well,
Maps are your friend when all else fails helping you find your way through darkness, rain and the light of day.

The time has come for the release of maps for Stormfront users. Currently maps have been published for the areas surrounding Ta'Vaalor.

The first step in the process is to ensure that you're using the right client, which would be Stormfront v1.0.1.17. If you are not already using it and are a PC user you can download it at http://software.play.net.

Once you're all setup with the proper client (and have done a clean restart in all game instances) head on over to Ta'Vaalor. Upon login you'll see a resident link in the Windows window called "Maps". It is the master map dialog box. If it's not already open, click on it to bring it forward.

"Travel Map" will display the map of the area you're currently located in, if one is present. Click on "Travel Map" and bring it to the front. You'll notice this slick little map created by one of the onsite artists. The room you're residing in will be represented by an icon on the map.

Right clicking on the open Travel Map Window will bring up a context menu with two choices, Configure and Close Window. Choosing Configure will spawn a new configuration DB (Dialog Box) with several configuration options. The configuration DB will allow you to set some preferences if you don't care for the default values. Zoom, Auto Centering, Cursor Drag and Icons are all fidgetable options. Auto Centering will center the map in the open Travel Map window when you move around the area. This is especially handy if you're viewing a large map in a very small DB. Cursor Drag allows you to Click & Drag (C&D) on the map image and move it around the DB, provided the image is larger then the DB. Currently there are five icons to choose from. Also note that users with a wheel mouse can use it to control the size of the image in the DB.

The "Maps" DB is the master list of maps we've published. Currently there are 20. Titles of these areas are: Barefoot Hill, Barley Field, Briar Thicket, Fearling Pass, Fethayl Bog, Foothills, Glaise Cnoc, Hilltop, Lunule Weald, Neartofar, Plains of Bone, Rambling Meadows, Silverwood Manor, Ta'Vaalor, Ta'Vaalor Catacombs, Toadwort, Vineyard, Yander Farm, Yander Turnip, Yander Wheat.

Clicking on the eye icon to the left of the map label will toggle visibility of that map in a static and unique secondary DB. Keep in mind that preferences are global and can't currently be set for each individual map.

The maps support ALT tags on the mouseover event (ie. if you put your mouse pointer over a room box it'll show some neato text). The currently published maps offer an abundance of info such as room name and a bulleted list of important items in the room. In the case of portals it also includes the go phrase of that portal.

Movement with maps is painfully simple. Simply click on a room that you'd like to move to, or click on a portal that you'd like to move through.

Please report any irregularities in game with the BUG tool.

3/25/2004 ROLEPLAYING TIP: RACE PART II
Is your character cultured?

Each race within GemStone IV can be separated further into several cultural groups. A character's culture can be just as important as their race. For many of the races, the individual cultures can be dramatically different from each other, so deciding which one is best for your character can be very important. Most characters would be heavily influenced by the culture they grew up in, even if they have since left it all behind.

For some characters, not choosing a culture will say a lot about them as well. Maybe your character grew up in a family away from any cultural centers, or maybe had no regular family at all. If your character was not heavily influenced by a specific culture, leaving it blank will tell more about him or her than you might at first think.

If you want to choose a culture for your character to help develop him or her further, but haven't yet, the GemStone website provides a lot of information. You can either choose a culture that seems to best fit an already established character, or pick a culture first and then build a character around it.

Some people like their characters to be a prime example of what they think someone from that culture would be like. Others like to go against their chosen culture. If you choose to go against the culture, it really only works well if you do your homework so that you understand the culture, and then develop reasons for why your character is different than the norm.

For information on the various cultural choices available to your race, look here:

3/21/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: TA'ILLISTIM RANGER GUILD OPENS!
Rangers, huzzah for you!
We wish to ply you with libations!
For lo, it is true!
Your guild has opened in the Nations!

The Ranger Guild has established a local branch near the city of Ta'Illistim. Located along Sylvarraend Road, the guild offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. "I would like to formally welcome all kindred spirits," GuildMaster Evelle was quoted to say, "Our guild has something any lover of nature can appreciate -- and perhaps a few surprises, as well."

3/19/2004 ANIMAL COMPANION AFFINITY BUG AND BONUS INFORMATION
A bug was discovered recently that was negatively impacting animal companion affinity whenever a ranger used the spell Tangleweed when their companion was in attack mode. The result was an unexplained drop in affinity and much confusion. This bug was fixed a week ago, so no further affinity loss has occured due to it.

Due to the nature of this bug, each ranger who currently knows the Animal Companion spell will receive a one-time affinity bonus roughly equivalent to the affinity needed for one mid-range "step" as indicated when using GAZE on the companion. Note that those already at the higher affinity levels may not notice a messaging change when gazing after the bonus is awarded. Rangers who do not know the spell as of March 19th are not eligible for this bonus.

The eligible ranger will automatically receive the bonus when first casting the spell to summon their companion after logging in, and will be notified that the bonus was applied. For those already playing when the bonus goes into effect, the bonus will be given the next time they log in and summon their companion.

3/16/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE ROSTERS
Can't even remember
Who your members are?
Especially when they live
Somewhere really far?

Then use HOUSE ROSTER

House officers with Chairman or Secretary powers may now view a list of House members with the HOUSE ROSTER command.

As this information was not recorded previously, members are being recorded as they log in. This process has been underway for a couple weeks now, so most House rosters have a sizable number of entries.

3/16/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE VOTING
Do the Ayes have it?
Or maybe the Nays?
Do you have an opinion
And officers to sway?

Then cast your ballot
The results could be close
The Elanthian Great Houses
May now hold House votes

Houses may now establish votes for all members via the HOUSE VOTE command. Type HOUSE alone for usage information. An officer must have either Chairman or Secretary powers to administer a vote. Houses may only have one active vote at a time.

All House members are eligible to vote in a House vote. To view or vote in a House vote, a House member must be somewhere on House grounds or in one of the House lounges and then type VOTE HOUSE. A House member may change their vote at any point while the vote is open. If a vote has concluded, a House member may use VOTE HOUSE RESULTS to view the results (until they are cleared by an officer).

House votes may be either open ballot (the identities of the voters and their votes are shown) or secret ballot (only the number of votes for each option are shown), based on the selection of the administering officer. The results for a vote may only be viewed after the vote has been closed, and vote settings may not be changed after voting has begun.

3/16/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE CONTROLLER COMMUNICATION
E-mails get lost
Or people aren't there
Need something for your event
To set it off with a flare?

Now there's a tool
Which all officers can see
And your messages are there
Instantaneously

A new command is available for communication between House officers and the House Controller: HOUSE NOTE. Type HOUSE alone for usage information. All House officers may use this command.

This command may be used for any communication between single Houses and the House Controller. Please feel free to use it in lieu of e-mail, unless the message is private and you'd prefer it only be seen by the House Controller. As well, messages to all Houses should use the current methods.

3/14/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: DIVINE WRATH (319) UPDATE
Through fury of the godly masters,
By loyalty of faithful casters,
Smite the enemy hordes most fell,
with the improved Divine Wrath spell.

Divine Wrath (319) has been updated.

A faithful servant is rewarded by their deity's attention. By invoking their god's name, the Cleric may summon the fury of their divine master. By utilizing the caster's strength, this multi-attack spell will cause direct damage to the unlucky target with a secondary critical effect, if applicable.

Like Smite/Bane (302), certain deities will grant their followers a version of Divine Wrath that will work effectively upon undead targets, and less effectively versus living creatures. This principle works in reverse for the other deities. Unlike Smite/Bane (302), there is no additional mana cost associated with the spell when it is used on the opposite creature type.

The attack begins after a short summoning period. A Cleric that does not make a deity selection on the CONVERT list (not including the 'other' option) will be forced to kneel in subjugation when Divine Wrath is cast. The summoning period before the attack can be lessened with training in Spiritual Lore, Summoning. This skill not only determines the length of the summoning, but also the pause between each attack frame.

The skill Spiritual Lore, Religion is used to determine the number of attack frames a cast of Divine Wrath will have. The minimum attack frame is one, with a maximum set at three. There is no increased mana cost for having more than one attack frame.

Spiritual Mana Control (SMC) skill determines three things for this spell. First, it helps bolster the critical applied in the secondary effect. Second, it sets the number of creatures this multi-attack spell can hit in one frame. For example, a Cleric with 102 skill in SMC can hit a maximum of 5 creatures at once. Third, SMC training will help reduce the wait time in between casts.

3/12/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: LIMB DISRUPTION (708) UPDATE
There once was a Sorceress with a mean streak
She would cast Limb Disruption at every man she'd meet.

With luck the limbs that would animate
Were the arms of the poor chap she would not date.

Then one day to her surprise
His legs began to animate before her eyes.

His arms and legs beat him into a bloody mess
A grin crossed her face, I must confess.

Limb Disruption (708) has been updated.

The limbs that can be animated has expanded. Now you can animate arms, legs, forelegs, and... tentacles?

Previously, the chance for animation was based on the Sorcerous Lore, Necromancy skill. That is still the case, but it is now checked against the critter level, making it more likely that critter limbs will animate for you.

Also, the effectiveness of the animated limb was previously based on the caster's strength, but is now based on the level of the critter - a giant rat limb would not be as lethal as a troll king limb, regardless of caster strength.

The size of the critter and therefore the size of the limb is also a factor in determining how effective it will be - an ice hound foreleg will not likely take out a frost giant.

This message was originally posted in Sorcerers, Sorcerer Spells. To discuss the above go to http://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=27&topic=4&message=783

3/10/2004 WARRIOR TRICK APPRAISE IMPROVED!
The Warrior Guild skill Appraise (wtrick appraise) has been improved to provide increased information on a desired foe's combat worthiness. Warriors using this skill may now evaluate their opponent's maximum health level, as well as their opponent's current health level.

3/9/2004 STOWING AWAY!
While we'd like to take this chance to remind you to always use MY when putting your valuable items away in a container, for those who often forget to, and are tired of losing their 10X swords of doom, we offer you STOW.

The STOW verb will allow you to set a default container in which to place your items. The STOW LEFT and STOW RIGHT options will transfer an item from the respective hand to your default container (assuming you have set one with STOW SET {container}). STOW {ITEM} will automatically place an item you are holding into your default container, assuming it is within reach.

StormFront users can click on a container in their inventory to set it as their default container, or on an item in their hand to stow it. You may also type STOW for usage information.

3/9/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: TA'ILLISTIM WIZARD GUILD OPENS!
O' did the Sorcerers fall,
And out of their ashes we present,
The refurbished Wizard's Guildhall!

The Wizard Guild of Ta'Illistim has formally opened its doors to mages of all races and backgrounds, allowing them both the use of their impressive educational facilities and one of their magical workshops. When asked why it was decided to open the guild to the public, GuildMaster Setheve commented, "While our own private research for the Queen has greatly benefitted from the increase in funds, there is only so much that silver can do. Rather than waste it, I felt the need to extend a helping hand to those mages who have never felt the origins of Wizardry all around them -- thus, the Illistim's enlightenment may come to all who seek it."

The guild is located along Moonglae Var, near the airship docks.

3/8/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: EXPEL EXTENDS ITS REACH
Tired of members who never show their face?
Ones you'd like to expel and leave no trace?
Your answer is here, if you have a witness
EXPEL now removes members at a distance

The EXPEL command may now be used on CHE members who are not in the current room, though they must be in the game. All other restrictions still apply.

3/8/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: CHE OFFICER POSITION TITLES
Humdrum titles
Gotten you down?
No fun or flavor
On the plaques in the town?

All Chairmen and Secretaries
All one and the same
Neither sugar nor spice
All equally tame

Well, time to rejoice
For adorning the signs
Are Exchequers and Regents
And even some Scribes

Now CHE members can shout and cheer
Custom officer positions are here!

Houses may now decide their officer titles for themselves, and as a result, some Houses now have titles which are not Chairman, Co-Chairman, etc. Each position will now have one of Chairman, Secretary, or Treasurer powers, or no special powers at all. Many officer-related features of the system are restricted to those officers with specific powers.

3/7/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: HOLY RECEPTACLE (325) UPDATE
Calling upon the gods to bless
gems to power Brimstone and Nexus.
Holy grenades and the ability to transport
have both improved greatly for the Clerical sort.

Holy Receptacle (325) has been updated.

Tier 2 - Brimstone

*Gem use mana cost
There is no longer a mana cost when the gem is used.

*Skill factors
Spirtual Lore, Spirit Summoning determines the chance of hitting the target, while the value of the gem determines the crit damage level. This update makes the gem useful to Clerics and non-Clerics alike.

*Immolation effects
The target will now be subject to an immolation effect following the first crit strike. KAPOW!

Tier 3 - Nexus

*Failure modification
Previously, if your attempt to Nexus failed, you would be stripped of half your max mana and be hit with a mana regeneration penalty for a few minutes. Now there are two types of failure; either the gem can shatter or, on a particularly bad failure, you'll be hit with the 3-minute mana regeneration penalty along with the gem shattering. In short, the stripping of mana from the Cleric's current pool of mana is no longer part of the failure.

*Multiple uses
The gems blessed with Nexus could potentially have a number of transport uses. The chance to create a successful Nexus portal is based on the Cleric's Spiritual Lore, Spirit Summoning skill as well as the value of the gem. Upon each successful Nexus portal creation, the gem loses some of its power to create another portal until it can no longer hold any power or it fails to create a portal. This decrease depends upon the number of people transported by the portal. Remember to LOOK at the gem to determine the power of the blessing.

These updates can be discussed in the Cleric folder --> Clerical Spells sub-folder, on the GemStone IV forums at https://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=23&topic=4

3/7/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: ANCIENT RUINS OUTSIDE TA'ILLISTIM!
Recent excavations along Gyldemar Road have uncovered a rather large amount of ruins near the path to Caelith Villa. While most of the important discoveries have been sent off to Ta'Illistim for further research, it was said by several workers on the excavation that there was a very impressive collection of artifacts that they could not move and left standing.

The overseer of the excavation, Bellare Uv'ienne, who was once a brilliant pupil of the now-missing Vathezir Ath'une spoke briefly about the ruins, "It wasn't a very significant discovery in terms of any breakthroughs, but it would prove mildly interesting to any students of the archaic. I encourage them to visit the site that we left for an interesting study."

3/7/2004 HERT BALLISTA TRAINING NIGHT
Troubled times seem to come when least prepared. Invasions come and many are left unable to lift a blade because the forces are so great. When times like these come we, as a Free Town, must bind together and fight where we can and when we can.

If you find that the creatures attacking are stronger then you; if you find that your head likes to easily part from your shoulders when bad guys come into town; if you would like to lend a hand instead of running to the nearest Inn... then please come to H.E.R.T.'s Training Class.

We ask that you be ready to spend 2 hours learning the inner workings of Ballista Towers. You will be taught all stages from logging to transporting, from stocking to loading, and much more. If you are a spell caster, then the towers have a special place for you as well. We will teach and test what spells can be used in the towers. We will also give the fundamentals for other towers around the lands. Please bring an axe with you.

Worried that the class will be too large? Worried that you'll just be another face in the crowd? Please don't. There are many towers around 'Haven, and we have many that are intimately aware of what is needed to use them. If need be, we can split up into 3-6 groups and allow each person to have a chance to not only cut, load, and aim a tower but much more.

Please join us in Solhaven, on the 11th day of Charlatos at the ninth hour past noon by elven standard time.

3/5/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: SPELL INCANTATIONS
You can now use the INCANT verb to prepare a spell and cast it at the same time. INCANT automatically finds a target, so you only need to specify the spell name or number (if you don't have one prepared already). INCANT chooses a target based on whether or not the spell is considered offensive (if a spell can't be cast in a sanctuary, that's a good indication that it is offensive), so it can target you or a creature as appropriate.

StormFront users have already been able to prepare and cast at the same time using the spell control group of buttons in the Combat Panel.

3/4/2004 MARCH OF RHYMES: TREASURE GENERATOR ENHANCEMENT
Treasures won may now take form,
In things that differ from the norm.
Knapsacks, backpacks, plain sacks and pouches,
From a creature that stalks or one that crouches.
More clothing to better suit your living,
And all are random in their giving.

An improved, more robust treasure system will now provide more randomized options in clothing and containers found as treasure. Enjoy!

3/4/2004 TA'ILLISTIM WIZARD GUILD TO RECEIVE MORE FUNDING!
The Ta'Illistim Wizard Guild, home to some of the world's most brilliant researchers, has recently been granted a generous amount of extra funds. Due to the Sorcerer's Guild untimely closing, the seized assets of the now-defunct guild have been diverted to improve that which the Illistim value most -- learning and knowledge.

When asked what his plans were for the sizable amount of silvers, GuildMaster Setheve responded, "Until now, our research could only focus upon certain areas that we feel the public at large could not fully appreciate. With this boon granted to us, however, we can afford to not only increase our research into these specific realms of magic, but offer a more broad range of study for foreign wizards. All we require are a few slight renovations to the guild and our doors will be open to all mages with the desire to learn."

3/3/2004 EMAIL VIRUS ALERT
It has come to our attention that some of you have received email which appeared to come from @simutronics.com or @play.net. These emails may have stated that there was a problem with your account or your email account and that the details are in an attached file (usually a .ZIP file). This attached file may be encrypted with a password which is included in the email.

This email did not come from us. It is part of a virus attack by some unknown party.

Unfortunately, encrypted .ZIP files cannot be scanned by an anti-virus program and therefore pass through anti-virus programs as if they were clean. This means that even though you have anti-virus software, it may not protect you if you open the attached file from this sort of email.

In the cases we have seen, the unencrypted attached files have the virus Worm.Bagle.Gen-1 in them and we assume that the encrypted ones do as well. These emails are NOT coming from Simutronics or play.net and we urge you to delete all of these files that you may receive without opening them. As with many of the previous viruses and worms, the Bagle worm "spoofs" the sending email address to make them appear to be coming from someone other than the actual sender.

We encourage all of our customers to use both firewall and anti-virus programs to increase their security. New attacks are created frequently and these programs must be updated regularly to make certain that your protection is at its best. There are good programs, either for purchase or for free, that provide quality protection; ensure that protection by acquiring them.

3/2/2004 TA'ILLISTIM SORCERER GUILD SHUT DOWN!
Following a vigorous investigation, the Sorcerer Guild in Ta'Illistim has been found guilty of continuing practices of demonic summoning within the city's walls despite cautions from Queen Myasara and her royal scholars. The properties and all items within the Guild have been seized and plans for either a renovation or a complete demolition have been planned.

The Sorcerer Guild in question was a rather exclusive branch, home to a reclusive sect of researchers -- its doors have largely been barred to the public due to their work. The local GuildMaster, Vathezir Ath'lune spoke briefly on the issue -- declaring that Queen Myasara was a weak-willed and spineless ruler with no true ambition for the vast amounts of knowledge the paths of the sorcerous arts offer. Days after his comments, Lord Vathezir disappeared and has not been able to be reached since.
