1/30/2005 FASTHR'S REWARD (115) RELEASED
GM Nitid and GM Lothwyn have released Fasthr's Reward (115)!

Fasthr's Reward (115)

Mnemonic: FASREWARD

Duration: Special

A reward granted to Fasthr by the Arkati of Liabo, this spell can provide a second chance to ward an attack spell. On failed a warding against a Spiritual sphere spell, this warding shield has a 50% chance to activate, allowing the target another attempt at warding the spell. This activation causes the warding shield to dissipate, regardless of the result of the second warding roll. Against semi-Spiritual spells, this warding shield is 25%. For non-Spirit spells, the activation chance is 12.5%.

Fasthr's Reward has a flat, 10 minute duration when self-cast and can be refreshed. Otherwise, it has a flat, 2 minute duration, which is not refreshable.

Training in Spiritual Lore, Blessings increases the odds of activation by 1% at 1 rank, with a maximum additional bonus of 19% at 190 ranks. This lore bonus is applied before considering magical sphere.

Information on magical spheres: http://www.play.net/gs4/info/magic-guide.asp#spheres

Discussion will take place in the Magic Spells and Systems - Minor Spiritual Circle folder of the GemStone IV Forums.

1/29/2005 DIVINE VENGEANCE (1613) RELEASED!
GM Elnath has released Divine Vengeance (1613)!

Divine Vengeance (1613)

Mnemonic: VENGEANCE

Duration: 1200 seconds +60 seconds for every Paladin spell rank known; refreshable

Type: Special

With Divine Vengeance, the paladin petitions his patron for protection in order to prepare for an unfortunate event. If the paladin is defeated, the patron may choose to exact vengeance upon the paladin's killer (man or beast). This retribution can be very devastating, even fatal; making it known that no one upsets a Power with impunity.

Shortly after the paladin's death, his patron will strike. The paladin's corpse need not be present for the vengeance to take place. However, there is no guarantee that the paladin's patron is not busy with other matters, thus exacting no vengeance, but this is uncommon.

The spell duration will expire with the paladin's death. There are no lore effects for this spell.

Discussion will take place in the Paladins - Paladin Spells folder of the GemStone IV Forums

1/28/2005 ROLEPLAYING TIPS: OOCISMS
Most players try hard to remain IC (In Character) while in the game to preserve our fantasy atmosphere and to make the world of Elanthia a more vivid place. But there are a lot of terms commonly used that are only thinly veiled OOC (Out of Character), and are in fact pretty much the same thing as just saying the OOC words.

It takes a bit of experience and thought to recognize these types of terms and to learn better ways of phrasing things. It is easier than it seems, and pays off in big ways. To give an idea of the type of things being discussed, I will give some examples of common OOCisms.

Weather: Many players use the term "weather" to refer to game lag. If it's rainy or sunny, it's rainy or sunny for everyone in that town. So saying one character has bad weather while another doesn't, simply makes no sense. Other ways to get the point across are to say things like, "I'm feeling really sluggish at the moment," or "I'm so tired I can barely move," or maybe on a hot summer day, "It's so humid out I just don't feel very peppy."

Gods: The word "gods" is often used to refer to GMs (GameMasters), but again, it usually makes little sense when given any thought. Gods in Elanthia are the Arkati and other immortals, and they rarely are interested or involved in the types of things where this euphemism is used. A "god auction" can better be referred to as a "grand auction," since the Arkati aren't actually selling their stuff! A "god wedding" can be referred to as a "cathedral wedding."

Age: It used to be that character age was connected to their levels, which of course made little sense. Now that we have an actual age system in the game that is separate from levels, it is appropriate for us old timers to wean ourselves away from this euphemism as well. If you ask a character how old they are, don't be surprised to hear they are 143 years old, even if they are only level 5. When talking about creatures, the age of the creature is not likely to be known, but what can be known is that a warrior of lord stature can probably take them on or not.

Trainings: This one can be hotly debated as to how appropriate it is. Many roleplayers strongly feel that trainings are just as OOC as levels, and feel the term has no place here. Others feel that it is an acceptable alternative term. However a player feels about it, it is yet another example of a term that can usually be stated in a more IC manner, given a little thought.

Pages to study: Some players try to translate experience needed into a more IC terminology, usually coming up with things like, "1,234 more pages to study in my book." But again, it is simply a thinly veiled reference that is not really any better than saying, "1,234 experience to level." It might be better to say something along the lines of, "I have been practicing my skills very hard, and feel that I will be seeing some improvement soon."

These are just a few examples of the OOCisms commonly seen within the game. For players who are interested in improving their RP (roleplaying) skills and making their characters into living and breathing Elanthians, it is a good subject to which you can devote a bit of attention. Of course, all of the above situations are also easily solved by using WHISPER to convey information that you want to be exact or is OOC in nature, thus bypassing any need to come up with a clever euphemism.

Shar put Nyvelise to the test, demanding that she prove her necromancy skills. Nyvelise was able to animate a corpse! This impressed Shar so much that she made Nyvelise a General of her army. Soon afterward Nyvelise is tempted by curiosity and began experimenting with Shar's Maelshyonic Triad, a relic that is rumored to have great magical powers. The Obsidian Legion is the powerful right hand of the Obsidian Tower. In a desire to dispel silly Halfling myths and confirm some of the greatest legends in the history of Elanthia, there will be an informational session held on Feastday, the 22nd day of Lormestra, (January 22, 2005) at high noon. We will depart shortly thereafter for an hour-long session to discuss history, purpose, and the Legion's future around Ta'Illistim and Ta'Vaalor. 1/17/2005 MUTUAL RESPECT
The majority of our customers are extremely courteous and we are greatly appreciative of your help in doing our jobs more effectively. However, we've noticed a certain segment of our customers being particularly discourteous during assists and other standard customer service interactions. In order to curb this, we're asking that people bear in mind that staff members are due the same level of respect that you, yourself, expect. This means, quite specifically, that directly swearing at or insulting a GameMaster, GameHost or Board Monitor publicly, or in private consultation, may result in punitive action. Staff members are expected to maintain those same standards of mutual respect in their customer interactions.

While we understand that certain events in the game may affect you negatively and can impact your interactions with other players or the staff, we do expect players to maintain a certain level of civility in their discussions of a problem. We don't expect this to be an issue with the general population of Gemstone III in their normal course of interactions.

If you have any questions or require clarifications regarding this policy, please feel free to express your constructive comments or concerns to [email protected] with a subject line of RESPECT.

We hope this change will help to make our interactions a more positive experience for all involved.

During the month of November we temporarily increased everyone's number of extra character slots by 1 to allow everyone to test Paladins. It is now time, as stated in our previous announcements, for anyone who used these slots to either add an extra character slot ( https://www.play.net/gs4/signup/subscribe_char.asp ) or delete the character of your choice ( https://www.play.net/gs4/play/delete_character.asp ).

Starting on January 7th, we will begin removing these bonus character slots and associated characters from accounts. Those who took advantage of the slots, who do not prepare their account in advance, may TEMPORARILY lose access to a preferred character. If we do remove a character you would have preferred to remain, you can contact the billing department at [email protected] or 636-925-3172 to have the character returned to your visible character list, but it would be best to prepare by January 6, 2005 by amending your account to your wishes.

The Society would also like to extend a special invitation to all those involved in the Leya Quest to be reunited with friends of old and perhaps share a story or two regarding their experiences.

1/6/2005 WAVEDANCER - SECOND RUN TICKET AVAILABLE TONIGHT
We are pleased to announce that one First Class Double Occupancy ticket for the Second Run of the Wavedancer event will be re-released for sale this evening at approximately 8PM Eastern time. In normal cases, we will not make these types of announcements when individual tickets become available, but since these tickets are highly-prized items, we felt this is the most favorable solution to permit the most people the ability to purchase this ticket. Please remember that if you already have a first class or stateroom purchased for any Wavedancer run, that you should not purchase this ticket. Thank you and good luck.

1/3/2005 WORLD COSTUME FOR THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS
An overview and sketchbook of world costumes has recently been published by Aleyvan Radhome. Drawing upon her experience as the costumer for the Allace Players in Ubl, Miss Radhome has combined careful research and a keen eye for detail to produce a text that should prove invaluable to those in the theatrical world and beyond. She is equally deft at describing familiar garb - such as that of the Dwarves or of our own Empire - as she is at explaining the unusual items worn by far-flung and exotic races. Although she introduces a number of technical terms for the garments portrayed, her style remains accessible and clear. The accompanying sketches, though simple, are very helpful when it comes to understanding the more foreign traditions.

You may read the document for yourself at http://www.play.net/gs4/info/tomes/costumes/home.asp

1/3/2005 REMINDER TO REMOVE EXTRA CHARACTER SLOT

You will then travel to the Obsidian Tower and listen to legends, tales and lore of the Dhe'nar. Questions may be allowed afterwards.

1/1/2005 SOME NEW DIRECTIONS
There's nothing worse than getting lost while you're looking for a guide, so today we added the travel offices to the lists of directions available in Wehnimer's Landing, Icemule Trace and Ta'Vaalor. Just type DIR TRAVEL to set your footsteps on the right path to hire a guide for inter-city travel.

Note that, although Solhaven has a travel office, the DIR command does not work in that town.

In related news, Lute, the proprietor of Liltings Music Shoppe in the Landing, also made certain arrangements with town officials to add directions to her shop. "Business has been slow," she said, "what with all the instrument craftsmen at these festivals they keep having! Maybe a little advertising will help."
