9/30/2005 | THANATOPH BOWELS HIGH-LEVEL HUNTING GROUND RELEASED! |
---|---|
A terrible quake shook the environs of Wehnimer's Landing, as plumes of steam rose high into the air above the Thanatoph. The denizens of the Illoke Stronghold rose up to destroy those who would intrude upon their territory, with the employ of their strongest allies.
During the commotion, the stone trolls, with renewed strength, returned to the upper reaches of the Thanatoph with the stone giants. Meanwhile, the mountain lions were displaced to its lower reaches to join the red bears. Adventurers pressed on through the fray, taking the fight to the Illoke creatures in the heart of their den. The way to the inner depths of the Thanatoph was opened, and the stony beasts were kept at bay. The Thanatoph Bowels lies host to a number of new creatures sporting a wide array of abilities, including: earth elementals, greater earth elementals, Illoke elders, Illoke jarls, and greater krynches. |

9/21/2005 | BUYER BEWARE |
GemStone IV operates in a "buyer beware" economy. When visiting merchant shops, use the tools provided to get an idea of what you are purchasing, namely any posted signs and the INSPECT verb. Though keep in mind, many merchant shops intend to keep an air of mystery about their wares. All shop items are sold as-is and no refunds or changes will be made, unless there is an error in how the item is constructed.
When making a purchase from another player, there are several ways everyone can protect themselves from getting scammed, such as asking to see the note or contents of a container before buying, getting a bard to LORESING, having a warrior ASSESS, casting Elemental Detection, and using one of the magic crystals (such as the one in the Abandoned Inn). In order to avoid someone running off with your money before handing over an item, use the EXCHANGE verb. All buyers are responsible for protecting themselves from dishonest dealers, so it is a good idea to check into the reputation of a seller when making a large investment of silvers. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it most likely is! |

9/18/2005 | DEATH WARMED OVER CHANGES RELEASED |
The "Death's Sting" system has been updated with the "Death Warmed Over" changes.
Summarization of changes: + DEPART now has greater penalties than just regular decaying. + Being restored to life by any means other than resurrection results in a period where the character absorbs experience inefficiently. There is no experience inefficiency in Platinum. + No changes were made to the penalties for characters who die with deeds and are resurrected by spells. + It is now possible to UNLINK to break preservation. Discussion will take place in the Game Design Discussions - General Discussions about GemStone IV folder of the GemStone IV Forums located at http://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=6&topic=3 |

9/17/2005 | MAKEUP MAKEOVER! |
The alchemists of Oire have labored long these many years past to restore the lost art of manufacturing cosmetics and have, at long last, completed their research. "We are delighted that all the old formulas have been recovered," announced the lead alchemist, "and further we have discovered a whole new range of colors and scents for makeup!"
"Unfortunately," the alchemist continued, "some of the colors used in old makeup will have changed. You should carefully INSPECT any makeup you now own. If the color looks wrong, keep an eye on the calendar for a date when Elaraeyn will be working with makeup in her boutique in Wehnimer's Landing." [Alternatively, please contact GM Andraste directly to arrange a time to fix your old makeup: [email protected]] Enjoy! ~GM Bernt |

Snarl's menu hasn't changed, but the food is a bit tastier these days. [Subject to opinion.] | |
9/17/2005 | SMILE UPDATE |
The SMILE verb has been updated with a player-targeting option.
Usage: SMILE ::{name} This version of the verb checks that your target is in the lands, in the room, and visible, and messages appropriately. It does not default to the roleplaying version of SMILE, so you can avoid that awkward messaging that used to occur when your target suddenly left. Check VERB INFO SMILE for more information. |

9/15/2005 | IMPORTANT ITEMS LIMIT |
Recently, several characters have successfully corrupted themselves due to excessive inventory. While they can be restored, any items not registered are of course, lost to the ether.
The reason for this corruption is excessive inventory. In these cases, all had inventories in excess of 900 items. For this reason, please do not store excessive items on yourself or even so-called, "locker characters." Most people do not keep this much inventory on them due to encumbrance issues, but save excess to characters they do not play. Make liberal use of your lockers, the gemshop, the furrier, the pawn shop, etc., but do be aware this is possible to do, and the end result will be a lot of waiting for a restoral and lost inventory. Thank you for paying attention to this matter, and SELL! SELL! SELL! |

9/14/2005 | TOWN MERCHANT SYSTEM UPDATES |
Within the next few weeks, I will be rolling in some major enhancements to the shop system used by most in-town merchants. These include:
* You may INSPECT, DESCRIBE, and APPRAISE display samples to learn more about what you're buying before you buy. * All features of the system are available through StormFront's point-and-click interface, including dialog boxes to guide you through item customization. * You may order quantities up to 9 of any item with a single command. * Customized items may be ordered either interactively or with a single ORDER command of the form: ORDER [{quantity} OF] {item#} [COLOR {color}] [MATERIAL {material}] For example: ORDER 2 OF 14 COLOR RED MATERIAL SILK to get 2 red silk gloves (if gloves are item number 14). * You stay in the shop room while ordering, rather than being teleported off somewhere. * The entire catalog (including backroom items if you have backroom access) is displayed at once, rather than in groups of 9. * You (the player) will no longer explicitly haggle with the system. Your character's personal skills and attributes, the frequency with which you patronize the shop, and the prejudices of the shopkeeper determine how well the negotiations go. This system is similar to how discounts are computed by merchants at festivals, but it offers greater flexibility. GMs can now tune shopkeepers' biases towards each race, profession, gender and alignment with Arkati. * You will no longer offend merchants by getting a low price, nor will you butter up merchants by paying a high price. Merchants offer a price at which they're willing to sell to you, and all profit is good. * Discounts for citizens are automatically deducted when you buy. The price quoted is before the citizen discount. * GM designers have many new tools to create customized shops, including custom containers for bulk purchases. GMs may also set up a shop that you can access from several different rooms, such as tables at an inn. I currently plan to put this system live first in Platinum on the morning of Thursday, September 22. If all goes smoothly, I plan to bring the system up in Prime on the following Monday morning, September 26. Please use the BUG system to report any non-critical errors you spot; if you find something that strikes you as deeply wrong, please both BUG and REPORT it. Credits: Most of the heavy lifting was done by on-site GM Quill and by GM Mitra, now working her magic over in HJ. Many thanks to GM Vaschka for her patient testing and to GM Coase for his swift QC. ~GM Bernt |

9/14/2005 | ATTUNE CHANGES |
The process of Elemental Attunement via the ATTUNE verb has been changed slightly in anticipation of upcoming changes to Call Familiar. The change removes the ties the ATTUNE system had to the four Elemental Lore skills and instead allows a player to select a particular type of elemental energy to ATTUNE to. This selection is a one-time choice, and cannot be changed or undone.
Check the ATTUNE verb for more details and usage options. |

9/8/2005 | DOOM DOOM DOOM -- IS GONE! |
With the destruction of the Black Temple in the sky, the threat of armageddon has passed! But not everything has returned to normal...
The Griffin Sword is no more, destroyed by the will of the one who brings an end to all things -- Gosaena. But even as the world recovers from the blow the Dark Alliance has inflicted, hope has glimmered across the sky in the form of silver strands. Temples across the Elanith have reported strange happenings since the destruction of the Griffin Sword -- reports say that, with a prayer at the right place, strange things begin to happen. This phenomenon appears to be spread across a wide array of temples of vastly different faiths, and clergyman everywhere say the same thing regarding it -- "It is fate." |

9/6/2005 | WHERE DID THAT THING GO? |
"I know it's around here somewhere." "I just had it a minute ago." "I put it someplace safe."
Sound familiar? Well, fret no longer! The INVENTORY verb has been updated with INVENTORY FULL, which will show your entire inventory, including the contents of your containers. This new option is compatible with the current display options so, for instance, INVENTORY FULL WEAPONS will display all the weapons in your inventory, along with all containers enclosing a weapon. Note that INVENTORY FULL will not display the contents of closed containers. But that's not all! For no additional charge, we're throwing in the REGISTERED display option, allowing you to view only those items in your inventory that you've registered! Type INVENTORY HELP in-game for details on the new syntax and check it out today! |

9/4/2005 | DOOM AND THE THREAT OF ARMAGEDDON! |
The Dark Alliance has gained control of all four pieces of the Griffin Sword, and their temple has appeared within the skies -- rumours of demonic incursions from across the lands have been whispered among the fearful, and creature of darkness roam freely across the countryside. People everywhere are warned to be on guard!
Eternal night has fallen over the land, and while things look bleak -- there are glimmers of hope throughout the land. The Vaalorian Army, bolstered by its recent battles with the Dark Alliance, has managed to hold most of the horde back from its locale, but warns that there may be some danger in their fortress city. The outpost of Zul Lugoth has reported nothing unusual beyond violent tremors. Should you seek sanctuary, it is recommended you head to either of those cities. The coming darkness must be stopped. Remain vigilant. |
