10/31/2005 DESIGN GM KITRINA'S OFFICE CONTEST
GM Kitrina has been a GM for over 2.5 years and still has not created her GM office!

BAD GAMEMASTER!

Sooo... how about a contest to design the office?

General Guidelines:

5-10 rooms (can be more or less than that too -- whatever works best for your design)

Don't feel limited! Feel free to write room messaging, show descriptions for props, script messaging for props, secret passages, day and night room descriptions, funky creatures, underwater caverns, a worm hole to another dimension, an island off the coast of Solhaven, a castle made out of cheese, in genre or out of genre, whatever. There are no creative limitations (well, no naughty stuff).

All submissions should be emailed to me at [email protected] no later than Monday 11/21.

PRIZE!

What's a contest without a prize? The winner will receive three alterations! These alterations can be for items and/or features. If you want to work on this contest as a group, you will need to figure out how you'd like to split up the prize.

Good luck!

10/31/2005 CHE CELEBRATES SPIRIT NIGHT TONIGHT!
As part of the spirit night celebrations, the Cooperative Houses of Elanthia will be sharing their traditional, yearly "treats" with all Elanthian citizens tonight. Look for the bannered tables outside each of the Great Houses of the Lands and partake of their "spirited" offerings.

Then get ready for the first annual CHE costume contest and ball event which begins at 7:00 PM EST at the shadowy tent on the walkway to House Paupers in the Landing. Everyone is invited!

10/30/2005 CENSURE (316) RELEASED!
GM Estild has released a fantastic new Cleric spell, Censure (316)!

Platinum players have been previewing the spell since Thursday, and it is now time for Prime to join in on the fun!

Censure (316)

Mnemonic: CENSURE

Duration: Immediate

Type: Attack

Those who displease a deity will be subject to its rebuke. In times long forgotten, each deity had a sacred incantation, spoken in a tongue now unknown, that would appropriately punish those who deserved it. By invoking this spell, a cleric is able recall such words to stun or immobilize (on higher warding failures) targets within the area (who are not joined to the caster).

Initially, the incantation will target up to four players or creatures. Training in Spiritual Lore, Religion increases the number of possible targets by +1 at 11 ranks, with a maximum of +16 targets at 200 ranks (seed 5 of the Summation Chart).

10/28/2005 TA'VAALOR CONTEST: WHO IS THAT DOCK FOREMAN, ANYWAY?
GM Bernt is running a series of contests so that everyone can have the opportunity to add to the richness of life in Ta'Vaalor.

For November:

The dock foreman has been unloading boats for as long as any of us can remember, but there's nothing particularly remarkable about him. Or is there?

Contest: (1) Write a short backstory for the dock foreman; (2) describe the foreman (what you see when you LOOK at him); and (3) write a set of messages one would see while in the room with him. These do not all have to include a reference to the foreman. They may include explicit reference to (visible) people in the room. Ideally, there would be ten or more such messages in the set. Most players will not have read the backstory; the best messages give subtle hints, though.

Enter by: Midnight (Elven time), Nov. 26, 2005. Send entries to [email protected].

Awards: The winning entry will be posted on the forums in full and used as the basis for updating the foreman NPC in the game. (Simutronics reserves the right to edit all entries in any way.) The author of the entry will receive a choice of either (a) two description alterations, including feature alterations, or (b) a customized wig by Gwyrraent. The top two runners-up will each receive one alteration.

10/25/2005 EES HOSTS: ASK A RANGER
Come ask the members of the Elanthian Explorers' Society all your burning ranger questions. We will also field questions regarding archery and brawling as hunting techniques. No question is too silly or too hard. Find the rangers at the Garden of Ancients in Ta'Vaalor.

This event will be held on the following upcoming dates and times:

The 25th day of Jastatos at 9:00 PM elven (Tuesday, October 25)
The 11th day of Eoantos at 10:00 PM elven (Friday, November 11)
The 5th day of Eorgaen at 9:00 PM elven (Monday, December 5)

10/22/2005 JAKARTA GAMBLING NIGHT
Clan Jakarta will be hosting dice games at the Moonglae Inn on Feastday, the 22nd day of Jastatos, and Restday, the 23rd day of Jastatos (Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23). These events will take place in the late evening and be announced via the thought net. Stories and tales will also be told. Bring your tales and your coins!

Discussion on this update will take place in the Wizards - Familiars folder of the GemStone IV Forums located at https://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=31&topic=13

10/21/2005 CALL FAMILIAR CEASES FUNCTION
The Wizard Guild has confirmed that the spell Call Familiar, a staple of the Wizard profession, has ceased to function. Details remain slim, however in light of the recent events and behaviors of familiars it seems this turn of events was not entirely unexpected.

This latest development in the recent peculiar behavior of familiars follows the statements made by Master Iallien during his discussion with local mages at the Ta'Illistim Wizard Guild the previous evening, who predicted the spell's functioning would become unpredictable and then cease entirely.

Master Iallien holds firm in his belief that the situation will right itself, and that these instabilities with the spell are a passing phenomenon.

Guild Masters of the Wizard Guilds seem less than enthusiastic to share these hopes, and have themselves gathered in an attempt to determine what the cause might be.

10/20/2005 EBON GATE 2005
How scary? So scary that it's FREE.

That's right! The popular Ebon Gate festival will be opened to all players at no charge this year. The dates for the festival are as follows:

10/21 9:00pm EST - 10/28 12:00pm EST: SimuCon Attendees Preview Week -- open in both Platinum and Prime

10/28 9:00pm EST - 11/4 12:00pm EST: Platinum

11/4 9:00pm EST - 11/11 12:00 pm EST: Prime

Please note that while the festival is open all week long, many of the activities and merchant appearances occur over the weekend.

Check the FESTIVAL command for information on events, contests and raffles that are sure to make this year's Ebon Gate festival the best ever!

A list of shops and merchants can be found at http://www.play.net/gs4/quests/info/ebon_gate_2005.asp

Can't get enough of the Ebon Gate festival?! Join us for a discussion on the GemStone IV forums at http://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=12&topic=5 to hear from the merchants, find player-created maps and item lists, and talk about all the great things you found and did at the festival!

10/20/2005 TA'ILLISTIM: PIG & WHISTLE TAVERN GETS NEW MENU
With a whine of his swine and a wink and a nod, the friendly barkeep took the advice of Lord Llarach Caelyr and modified his menu.

The Pig & Whistle, located on Aerie Wey in Ta'Illistim's northern quadrant, now sells savory flavors fit for a meager budget.

10/19/2005 FAMILIAR ACTIVITY INCREASINGLY ERRATIC
Masters of the Elanthian Wizard Guild have reported that incidents of unusual familiar behavior have increased dramatically in the past weeks. More and more reports have come in regarding familiars which are failing to respond to the requests of their masters, either misinterpreting their master's will or ignoring the commands entirely.

Guild Masters warn their fellow Wizards that the magic binding their familiars to them may be becoming unstable and to expect increasing odd behavior in the days to come. Effort continues on the part of the Guild to determine what the causes or solutions to these problems are.

Master Iallien, honored Archmage of the Wizard Guild, has stated that he intends to travel to the guildhall in Ta'Illistim to discuss matters with local mages. Master Iallien expects to arrive at the guild sometime on the evening of Niiman, 20th of Jastatos.

10/18/2005 CHE PRESENTS: SPIRIT NIGHT COSTUME CONTEST AND BALL!
Once again Spirit Night is upon us. The harvest has been brought in safely. The winds have cooled, and dark clouds fill the air with the menace of snow and freezing rain. Come and join the Cooperative Houses of Elanthia celebrate this time of reunions and hauntings. The Great Houses of Elanthia are proud to announce that this year they will be having a CHE-sponsored costume ball and contest. Everyone is welcome, regardless of House affiliation (or lack thereof.) See you there!

10/17/2005 HOUSE PAUPERS 15TH ANNUAL HAUNTED HOUSE!
Once again, and for the 15th time, the powers of House Paupers have contracted to turn this Great House over to the reprobate spirits that inhabit in its depths for two days of the year. Rumor has it that a never-before-seen chamber has been found and will be revealing it to us this year. (Perhaps in exchange for years of stealing the keg and hiding the lockers!) Come to Paupers on Jastatos 29th and 30th (Saturday and Sunday - October 29th & 30th) and join its living members (and the others...) for a weekend of hauntingly good fun and frolic, creepy sights and sounds, great contests - maybe even some injuries. Hopefully, in the end, the spirits will be appeased and retreat until next year.

The GameHost Program is looking to add a few new members to its team! What is a GameHost you ask? Good question! GameHosts are required to have a good knowledge of the game and should be able to answer questions about basic technical issues and general gameplay. They must also possess excellent customer service skills, be able to commit to a set shift schedule of six hours per week, and have demonstrated a history of following the policies of GemStone IV. 10/15/2005 TABLE SERVICE AT MALWITH'S INN
Malwith, the keeper of the popular inn of Ta'Vaalor, is pleased to announce that drinks from the bar can now be ordered while at a table. "I always like to give customers what they want," he said, merrily watching stewards carry large trays of beer to a nearby table, "especially when they're paying!"

10/8/2005 WIZARD GUILD REPORTS UNUSUAL FAMILIAR BEHAVIOR
Reports have surfaced recently that Wizards across Elanith are experiencing unusual behavior with their Familiar companions.

Numerous individuals have described the magical bonds between themselves and their Familiar as 'wavering' and 'fading', sometimes severing completely and resulting in the Familiar wandering away.

Additionally, Wizards have reported that their Familiar companions are at times not responding to their requests, either erroneously interpreting their master's will or ignoring their commands entirely.

Guild Masters would like Wizards to be conscious of their Familiars and their behaviors in the days to come, and would like to assure their fellows that their most learned brothers are investigating these oddities with their faithful companions.

10/7/2005 MAXIMUM ITEMS BUG FIX
GM Mestys recently rolled in a bug fix that will prevent characters from carrying over 500 items. The maximum number of items has not changed (it has been 500 for a very long time), but the system was not counting the items properly. This needed to be fixed to prevent any chance of character corruption. Now, when attempting to get your 501st item, you will receive messaging to let you know that you are not able to pick it up.

Discussion on this bug fix will take place in the Game Design Discussions - General Discussion About GemStone IV folder of the GemStone IV Forums, located at http://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=6&topic=3

10/5/2005 HUNTING AREA UPDATES - FAMILIARS, DEMONS AND MORE!
On Friday October 7, 2005, we will begin updating a number of hunting areas to allow familiars, minor demons, and other player-controlled creatures so that they may enter rooms they were previously unable to enter.

The update will continue over the course of the weekend, and during this time these player-controlled creatures may exhibit odd behavior in what rooms they will and will not follow their masters into.

10/5/2005 MAINTENANCE OUTAGE RESCHEDULED 10/6/05
There will be a brief maintenance outage of all GemStone IV instances on Thursday, October 6 at 9:30am CST lasting approximately 15 minutes.

10/4/2005 GO AHEAD AND STOP!
By popular request, there are now two more things that you can cease doing on command!

For Empaths, Clerics, and those under the effects of a Chrism gem, you can now STOP MEDITATING (or STOP MEDITATION) at will! No longer will increased regeneration plague you for an instant longer than you wish!

For Wizards and friends, the Rapid Fire spell can be prematurely dispelled on command with STOP 515 or STOP RAPIDFIRE. Why wait 30 seconds for it to expire when it could be gone right now?

As always, you can type STOP LIST to see an up-to-the-second list of all the things you could not be doing!

10/3/2005 JUNKYARD TALES WITH MISTYDEEP MANOR
On the 8th day of Jastatos, Mistydeep Manor will host Junkyard Tales in Ta'Vaalor. Join us at Victory Gate and tell us a story about a set of previously owned items (provided by us) and you could win! All participants will receive a token of the event.

10/3/2005 FLETCHING UPGRADES!
The fletching artisan guild skill has had its overhaul tonight. Below are the changes that the system now has.

* Darts can now be fletched using the same process as a crossbow bolt. The MEASURE portion of creation can be done using a complete or store-bought dart in one hand and the dart shaft-in-progress in the other hand.

* Paints, paintsticks, and fletchings can now be made to be any color, instead of the previous limited 24 colors of paint, 6 paintsticks, and about a dozen fletchings.

* You can have as much detail on the finished projectile as you'd like (two different colored stripes, a shaft color, fancy fletchings, fancy arrowhead/cap), but once you reach a certain length in characters, it'll change the item to have a SHOW description.

* Drills are now available at all fletching shops. These items will be used in the OPTIONAL step in the fletching process.

* Arrowheads and caps are now available in the fletching shops as well. These items will transfer their magical nature to the projectile created. Arrowheads can be used on arrows and bolts, requiring first that the shaft be drilled. Caps can fit on bolts and darts and don't require any prior drilling.

* Magical woods are now available in the different fletching shops in Elanthia as well. These items ARE backroom stock, so normal backroom rules apply. These will also transfer to the final projectile, but do not stack with the arrowhead. The larger value takes precedence.

* Master Fletchers that work their craft will notice a small amount of exp when they finish a projectile, providing that the quality is up to par with their skill.

10/3/2005 ELANTHIAN ELEGANCE HOSTS FASHIONABLE FRIGHT NIGHT!
Come join Elanthian Elegance in their debut event, Fashionable Fright Night, on the Day of the Huntress, the 28th day of Jastatos at 9:30 in the evening, elven standard time. There will be a contest of "Guess the Monster" in which participants use charades to try and get a panel of judges to guess what mysterious creature they are imitating. Three winners will be selected with a grand prize of an Ebon Gate costume with full accessories being awarded. There will also be a raffle for one themed gift basket filled with lots of fun treats to celebrate the Eve of the Reunion! Tickets for the raffle are 5,000 silvers each and can be purchased at the event. Directions to the event are to go two paces from Town Square Center in Wehnimer's Landing, through the gate, and down the path to the Meeting Hall Garden.

10/3/2005 BLACK WOLVES HOST LIVE AUCTION
On Feastday, the 8th day of Jastatos (October), from 3-8 PM Elven (Eastern), the Black Wolves will be hosting a live auction inside the Assembly Room in Moot Hall located in Wehnimer's Landing.

This is a great opportunity for new adventurers (or those without a hefty bank account) to participate. Most items will begin bidding at one coin. Though some will have a higher starting bid, they will still be at an affordable price.

So, come one, come all! Have some fun and maybe pick up some really nice items.

10/3/2005 TRAVEL GUIDES WORKING WITH DEBT COLLECTORS!
In collaboration with local debt collectors, the Travel Guides of Elanthia would like to remind adventurers that as of the 3rd of Jastatos 5105 (October 3, 2005), they no longer provide services to new adventurers with debts or fines.

WARNING: As of 10/03/2005, if your character is under level 4 and has any fines in Wehnimer's Landing, Icemule Trace, or anywhere in the Elven Nations, you will be unable to make use of the Travel Guide system until said debts and/or fines are paid in full.

You may circumvent this restriction by either paying your fines in full (use the WEALTH verb to view your fines), or by progressing to level 4. Characters of level 4 or higher with fines are not prevented from using the system.

10/2/2005 TA'ILLISTIM: SHIMMARGLIN INN GETS NEW MENU
After a long-awaited delay, the Lady of Shimmarglin Inn, in contract with Lord Llarach Caelyr, has come to an agreement on a menu for the tavern!

Stop in for a taste of some unique flavors, from fine glacial water to a signature cheese of House Illistim. Nearly all fine palates will be whetted and we believe you will not be disappointed.

Shimmarglin Inn is located on the west side of Shimmarglin Court, just below the Hanging Gardens in the heart of Ta'Illistim.
