WAKE does not work to wake oneself when forced into an unconscious state. SNORE lets one saw wood in style. Check VERB INFO {verb} and {verb} HELP for more information on each of the verbs. Note that SLEEP and WAKE have special messaging available for married couples.

10/23/2007 PRAYER OF HOLDING (301) UPDATED
The Cleric spell 301, Prayer of Holding, has been updated.

The mana cost of the spell has been changed from 1 mana per 2 levels of the target, capped at 20 mana to a summation seed 1 based off of the target's level. That is, a level 1 target costs 1 mana whereas a level 105 target costs 14 mana. This mana cost grows at a much slower rate than the previous one.

The duration of Prayer of Holding previously was dramatically influenced by the level of the caster. This factor has been reduced in importance and replaced with an increased importance of warding margin (endroll).

When imbedded by the Magic Item Creation or Holy Receptacle spells or charged by the Charge Item spell, Prayer of Holding counts as a level 8 spell to emulate the variable mana cost for different targets.

Prayer of Holding now counts as a spell of war.

10/23/2007 SLEEP (501) UPDATED
The Major Elemental spell 501, Sleep, has been updated.

The duration of Sleep was previously determined solely by the level of the caster. Duration is now based off of the warding margin (endroll).

When imbedded by the Magic Item Creation spell or charged by the Charge Item spell, Sleep counts as a level 8 spell to emulate the variable mana cost for different targets. The restriction of only being able to use Sleep cast from a magic item on a level 2 target has been removed. Also, when casting Sleep from a scroll, the spell will no longer take mana from the caster.

Sleep now counts as a spell of war.

10/17/2007 EMPATH SPELL CHANGES
A number of significant changes have been made to Empaths' spell arsenal.

These changes include the ability to cast Heal (1101) at a target, causing it to become Harm. This should be a boon to starting Empaths and will provide experienced Empaths with a low mana, finishing attack. Like all war spells, you can INCANT to auto-select a target, but this also prevents you from using it to Heal (to restore blood loss). You can still use the spell in a sanctuary, but you must use CAST. There is pending update which once released will mimic the old functionality of incant.

Bone Shatter (1106) has been revised. Lower level Empaths will seen a significant increase in damage, while higher level Empaths will see a significant decrease in criticals. This will bring the spell more in line with its goal of being a low level attack spell. There is also a negative TD modifier when the spell is used against lower level targets.

Wither (1115) has been released. This is a new high level attack spell which replaces much of the lost effectiveness of the old Bone Shatter. It also removes many previous restrictions Empaths had in their hunting variety, as it is able to affect the undead.

More specific details, such as lore impact, of the spells can be read in their official descriptions. Due to these changes, all Empaths will receive a free FIXSKILLS, which is to follow the normal policy of their application (does not stack with existing, unused FIXSKILLS, must be used before the next festival, etc).

This message was originally posted in Empaths, Empath Spells. To discuss the above follow this link - http://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=102&category=26&topic=15&message=3008.

10/17/2007 THE SOUL HARVESTER RETURNS
Crows circled high over head, their bodies casting long shadows in the moonlit streets of Helt. They were silent, allowing the natural sounds of the night to rise and fall with the passage of time. Crickets played their nightly hymnals to the accompaniment of nightingales, and love song of a cat punctuated their orchestra at odd intervals.

He stepped into the silvery streets with a limp, his form deeply buried in the folds of his tattered cloak. An odd anxiety filled him causing his cheeks to jump, the tick a result of his months of scavenging. The cane he carried added an odd staccato to the night's songs and aided him as he moved swiftly from one pool of lantern light to another.

Voices rose in laughter, and the man paused under a window to catch his breath. Snatches of conversation trickled into the streets.

"Just another few more days", a nasally male voice proclaimed.

"Aye", came the soft reply of a deep baritone. "That Village will be back up and we'll be able to shop antiques from over two centuries again."

The man beneath the window stiffened, his hand moving to an aged talisman at his neck.

"Velathae will profit us all again this --" the rest of the conversation is lost as the speakers moved away from the window.

A thin grin slips across the man's face as he resumes his walk down the lane. "Yes", he spoke to himself; a habit he had formed in his long years of waiting. "Velathae will rise again with all its lost bounties."

He pauses as he climbs the steps of a townhouse and continues only once he's unlocked the door. "And then I can continue what I've started in their precious hill of artifacts and heroes."

As the last word falls from his lips, the crows above cry out in an ear shattering caw that silences the natural sounds of the night. They wheel and dive at the man, but he is inside before they can manage anything more than slamming into his door.

10/17/2007 COMPLETING THE MAPS
She wandered through the Landing on her way to Moot Hall, excited that she'd found the final gemstone and elated that she finally had the orb in hand. I'll just get my map out, she thought to herself, and I'll finally be able to read what it says.

She slipped through the curtain with ease and pulled open her locker. After carefully closing the locker, she began to move the orb over the map. At first the lettering would not enlarge. She manipulated it this way and that, yet to no avail.

Leaving the confines of her storage, she stepped out into the early morning light that slanted across the doorway to Moot Hall. As she moved, the orb rubbed against the parchment and was sucked from her fingertips. The orb disappeared into the map!

She didn't gasp in surprise, after all she'd been bit several times by crows over the last week and the quill had drawn her blood from her hand. Yet, the map's sudden change did give her pause when it began to pulse.

As she gazed at it she saw: You notice that a spot on your map is pulsing. Looking at it more intently, you realize that it's the "An Old Manor, Porch" that is illuminated.

Curious, she read the fine script that was now pulsing upon her map: Moving your map around, you attempt to read the small words. A faint shimmering overcomes the vellum and the word "Bastuchi" becomes incredibly clear for a moment before fading.

Upon reading the name, she did gasp. The lettering on her map pulsed again, and this time she saw another name in another location. She remembered the name as a shop owner that she'd run across from last year's visit to Velathae.

Rolling up the map, she ran off to find some of her friends so that she could share what she'd found.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As many of you have guessed, this year's pre-quest was to tie this year's storyline in with the current festival ground's storyline. The crows do need you to come to Velathae, but they can't control the magic that surrounds them as strongly as they would wish. As a result, the maps that they've gifted to each of you will randomly show you a ghost and their location within a shop.

Enjoy!

10/15/2007 BEETLES BUFFED TO BCS

10/10/2007 ELANTHIAN JOURNAL - SHARE THE GIFT OF SIGHT
The tenth of Jastatos in the year 5107.

Last year it was reported by the collegiums at Nydds that more than forty percent of the educated populace has difficulty with reading due to orbital failures in the laymen's eyes. Indeed, some professions - that of miners, painters, woodsmen, and shipwrights - report that various hazards in their daily work environment have caused them to have objects lodged into their eye that eventually robs them of a portion of the sight. Other professions - those of seamstresses, scribes, jewelers, and alchemists - state that poor lighting is the cause of their falling sight.

Several healers, both in the area of Nydds and abroad, have worked to find a solution to this issue that will allow many people to regain their ability. Spectacles don't work for everyone, a young healer told reporters earlier this week. Some people need something more than the spectacles we currently have available. The truth of this statement was made clear to this reporter later in the day when an example of the growing issues was presented at a local library, where the librarian, who wears very thick glasses already, expressed difficulty in reading the print on an older volume.

However, there is a light at the end of our vision and it is one created and distributed by the Merchant Consortium. Cat's-eye orbs are fashioned of certain gems and have a clear band at their center that magnifies print when properly held before the article requiring reading. The amazing little orb is being offered by various merchants throughout the lands at a reasonable price and officers of the Consortium were reported to state that the Gift of Sight was more important than the price.

10/10/2007 A SPIRIT CELLAR INDEED...
More than just alcohol seems to populate Paupers' Spirit Cellar these days. Recent ghost activity increased over the last few days inside of Paupers' which even resulted in a handful of innocent people dying. The very walls of the House of Paupers shook violently and chunks of ceiling collapsed on members. Energy maelstroms appeared out of nowhere throughout the House endangering all those present. A group of members who survived the ghastly onslaught began receiving pieces of parchments with messages on them from beyond.

It would appear the Paupers' Spirit Cellar has become a focal point in the new unexplained haunting activity. Through the riddles on the messages it has been learned that the spirit of a woman has haunted Paupers recently in search of her son. It seems both their bodies may lie buried beyond the walls of the Cellar. The parchments also conveyed that soon another would come from far away to tell the ancient story of the ghostly woman's past and in doing so might be the only way to safely release her.

As innocent people have now died as a result of the increased ghost activity, the Officers of Paupers advises all members to be especially careful at night. Research is being done to verify if indeed something, or someone, could be buried under the House of Paupers.

10/5/2007 ELANTHIAN JOURNAL - SHARE THE GIFT OF COLOR
Hunger and starvation are a reality for many orphans in a wide variety of cultures and the instances of these children going uncared for is not isolated to frontier towns like Wehnimer's Landing. The rise of war tragedy orphans in the Turamzzyrian Empire has been felt in towns such as Mestanir, Vornavis, Talador, and Helt, as well as in the winter north in the township of Icemule Trace. Indeed, even the dwarves of Zul Logoth and the elves of Vaalor - where recent orcish invasions have decimated troops in their famed Ravelin - have their share of orphans.

In an effort to educate and raise money for these orphans across Elanith, the Elanthian Journal has opened its warehouse of old printing presses and donated large quantities of their faded prints to orphanages and schools. These faded newspapers can provide what the Journal is calling, "The Gift of Color." Children are being given the chance to create their own pieces of artistic work and to express themselves through art. One representative of the Journal went on record to say, "This gift is exactly the type of thing that children need. And what better time to begin this campaign than in the month of Jastatos? I would hope that the Liabo god is pleased."

When queried on how the average person can help, the Elanthian Journal went on to say that providing art supplies was only the first step. Teachers are required to help educate the children of orphanages and it is with that in mind the Elanthian Journal has decided to sell many of their old prints. "We are hoping to be able to draw on the public's desire to aid children in this radical fundraiser", a Journal representative said earlier today. Copies of the now faded print have been placed on sale alongside more current issues of the Journal in every place that the Journal is normally sold.

Remember to bring those hideously ugly items you have found from a critter to Ravelin on the tenth day of Jastatos, at 9pm to show to House Dreadnaught judges. 10/4/2007 THE HOUSE OF SERENITY PROVIDES SOME DART PRACTICE TIME!
The House of Serenity is sponsoring a dart practice session to "break in" its new dartboard located in the Golden Scroll Library of the House structure on Lumnis Street in Icemule Trace. So come on over and gather with other dart enthusiasts to hone your skills!

Date is Feastday, the 6th day of Jastatos, in the year 5107 (Saturday, October 6, 2007). Between half-past six and seven evening bells elven (between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm Eastern), a House officer will be about to hand out a set of FREE darts to all comers (one set per individual only).

Additionally the House officers would like to make folks aware that the library is always open to the public, so the dartboard is available for folks to come and enjoy a friendly game or two at any time!

Directions to House: Travel onto the ramp of the great temple, and then down. From there take the grey granite walkway into the House of Serenity courtyard and then enter the double doors into the library. Dartboard is located on the side of one of the bookcases (just take a look at the bookcases to see it clearly).

10/3/2007 OF CROWS AND JOURNALS
Banded together for a common goal, twelve scholars set out from the college of Nydds some two hundred years ago and headed deep into the ruins of the Ziristal Empire. Their research guided their steps across the mountain ranges to the resting place of the antiquated scrolls that they would need to fuel a legendary talisman which promised eternal life. However, fate was unkind and the talisman was fueled by more darker things than any of them imagined. Their tale unfolds upon the wrinkled pages of a worn leather journal, and the crows cry out for the price that they have wrought.

10/3/2007 ELANTHIAN TIMES REPORTS ODDITY IN THE AIR
Across the breadth and width of Elanth, and touching upon Nations both above and below ground, a strange phenomenon has started to take place that has many baffled and confused. The peculiar instance, or instances would be a more accurate portrayal, is that of strange avian feathers appearing within the locked chests and boxes that are spread throughout the known realms. Dormant at first glance, the feathers seem to come to life and transform into an ethereal crow. Many report instances of the crow actually biting those that find them, while others report claims of the strange winged creations asking their discoverers to either "Save" or "Avenge" a hereto undiscovered "them". In point of fact, several of the crows have been spotted by large groups of people in what can only be defined as a form mass hallucination or some spectral premonition that is targeted to plead with a captivated audiences for aid, however to who or what has remained thus far undefined.

Stranger still, some have reported that the ethereal beings are depositing tangible fragments of a real world journal that has no author and is equally as mysterious as the creatures delivering them.

Today reports have started that another oddity has begun with the feathers that continue to find their way into locked treasures. Indeed, while many of the feathers continue to disappear as they have for some time, an equal number seems to linger in the form of a strange quill. What do these quills do? What is the purpose of these strange crows? The crows seem to fly off to the south, are they heading to the city of Velathae as rumor would have it? Are the odd green lights near the city responsible for the avian beasts? Is this some ploy of the Merchant Consortium to create mystery and intrigue for the up coming festival? Or is it some strange marketing ploy of the Consortium to garner increased revenue for their already legendary festival?

When these questions were presented to representatives of the Merchant Consortium they were denied as out of turn and not in the nature of what the Consortium strives for. Many seemed appalled at the thought, while some few seemed a bit nervous. Only the days to come will tell us the truth of the mysteries that have found their way under lock and key.
