Said creatures have not been identified by the learned wordsmith, but word has it that some monsters will be carrying more booty. Be on the lookout for these deep-pocketed critters.

9/20/1999 NEW SURVEY READY.

9/14/1999 REVISED SCRIPTING POLICY
Any method allowing a player to gain skills, experience, money, or any form of in-game advantage in any Simutronics game while being unresponsive to the game environment is prohibited.

Experience and player reaction has shown that these methods (such as scripting) to gain skills, experience, money, or an in-game advantage while "unresponsive to the gaming environment" are disruptive to game play, helping to destroy game balance and the role-playing atmosphere that has been carefully nurtured in the game. In addition, it puts undue stress upon game resources (treasure, creature generation, etc.) which makes it harder to keep the game scaled to the needs of its normal players. Players who spend lengthy periods of time scripting skills or gaining experience while AFK (Away From the Keyboard) or "unresponsive to the gaming environment", don't just miss out on gaming opportunities (such as role playing, merchants, invasions, etc.), but also skip ahead at rates which the game cannot support and wind up at the edge of what the game provides more quickly than was intended in the design.

What constitutes a violation under this new policy? The following is a general guide to help you avoid being warned by staff:

=Any= experience gaining activity while being unresponsive to the gaming environment will be considered against policy. AFK scripting of =any= kind is entirely against policy and is an immediately warnable offense (If your attention is not in the game window, you should log out of the game or stop any experience, skill or money gaining activities to avoid being warned. The excuse that you looked away from the keyboard or left your desk only for a few minutes will not prevent you from gaining a warning since the staff will have no way of verifying that fact). In addition, =any= activity that allows you to gain =new= experience while using Rest Mode may result in a warning.

Warnings for scripting or any unresponsive activities are based on the staff's observation of the character, and the staff's judgment may vary from instance to instance. Therefore, each instance of long term scripting will be judged independently. Furthermore, GMs have the right to verify any and all characters are following this policy at any time.

Exceptions: In general, if you are running a script or are in Rest Mode and are not gaining any =new= experience, skills, money, or an in-game advantage, it does not fall under this policy. Being AFK or in Rest Mode while absorbing experience you have already gained is not a violation of this policy. However, =any= activity that's deemed by staff to be disruptive or not in the best interest of the game or its players can be warned when discovered. (E.g., if you script moving in and out of a room a warning may be issued because it causes undue screen scroll, if you are gaining skills passively a warning may be issued based on your being unresponsive to the gaming environment, if your "Rest Mode" message is determined to be inappropriate a warning may be issued based on the message being Out of Character or disruptive.)

- First offense: Character receives a formal warning, is moved to a consultation room, loses =all= field experience (unabsorbed experience) in =all= skills, and must reread and agree to policy before being released.

- Second offense: All characters on the account, plus potentially all other related accounts, can be locked out of the game for 30 days. In addition, substantial penalties of experience points may be subtracted from any or all characters on the account(s).

- Third offense: The account, plus all of the other related accounts, can be locked out permanently.

NOTICE: Please do not ASSIST or REPORT about this change, as the staff will not be able to discuss it with you in-game. Any questions, comments, or concerns about this new policy should be posted on the Simutronics Message Boards, Category 1 (Simutronics Discussions), Topic 30 (*Policy Discussions), or submitted in email to [email protected].

9/7/1999 CONTINUED DOWN TIME
Many of you have commented on the frequent down time we have experienced over the last weekend, since we've moved to the new server. We made every effort to fully load test the new server for several weeks before moving to it. However, we have found additional areas that need adjustment, before we can return to the same consistency of service we had before. In addition, response time on the new server isn t as good as we d like, and we are confident we can make the improvements needed to get the game running as fast and smoothly as possible.

To reach the goals of optimizing performance and reducing down time we will continue working on the server, as well as the game itself. This means you will see periodic resets, while we make changes to the code into both the game and server. Resets should only take about 10-30 minutes. We have currently scheduled a reset for 9/8/99 around 10AM Central time, and several other resets during the rest of the week as we finish code and put it in. We've been assured that when we reset the game we will do full in-game announcements prior to the reset, and that we should be back up within 10 to 30 minutes. In cases of serious problems or crashes, such as we experienced late last week and through the weekend, down time may be longer.

We appreciate your patience with us, while we continue our efforts to bring you the best gaming experience available.

9/1/1999 SYSTEM UPDATE NOTICE

Please be advised that these shutdowns should only be momentary, but may take up to an hour. There is no set time for them, just sometime in the morning at this point. If you access GemStone III during these hours, be prepared. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you, but it is an unavoidable phase in our growth and plans to bring you an even better GemStone III.
